    Default VX equipe wheel wobble

    Hello all,

The saga of recommissioning an uber-low mileage VX I equipe continues.

Latest issue is a steering wheel wobble that occurs at highway speeds. An alignment was done about 6 weeks/2500km ago. New Bridgestone RE92s were installed at easter, about 1000km ago. The brakes were a bit warped, however these were machined yesterday; before all this there was a tiny bit of steering wheel vibration, now it is more pronounced. Any thoughts? My first course of action was to re-do the balance and alignment (I have a free coupon for this). The front suspension has been looked at by myself and the place that did the brake machining; does not appear to be faulty.

try the bushes next. torsion bushes are often a culprit. quick and cheap to fix too

It sounds like more of a balance issue rather than alignment. Could a wheel be buckled?

I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.

i would think that if a wheel wasn't balanced properly or was buckled then the whole car would shake...not just the steering wheel...i'm no expert on that but it makes sense

Ive never seen machined brake discs give a proper brake pedal feel or be completely free from warpage.Once brake discs are old and worn, they are never the same as new ones, even after being machined.Brand new brake discs can be bought these days so cheap that its not worth worrying about machining them.

was the wobble there after the alignment? or after the tyres were fitted? sounds like the tyres r faulty, if they were out of balance the wobble wouldnt get worse unless a weight has come off.

To clarify - the car was fine after the alignment and new tyres. Biggest change was after getting the brakes machined. Driving today there was not the wheel wobble I experienced under heavy braking at highway speeds before the machining, so the external runout of the front brake discs must be minimal (rears were fine, apparently); i figure that the ventilation fins won't be lined up, regardless of how much the exterior was machined, creating a mass imbalance. hmm, methinks I should have got the discs replaced rather than machined.

wheels balanced for free, they were slightly off, seems to have helped, vibration is back to where it was originally. will keep an eye on it.

nup, viibration back again - got a free 4-wheel alignment and balance done at local bob-jane (it was an offer for buying a full set of 5 tyres...) front end alignment quite out (I do remember whacking a kerb....). See how it goes on tomorrows uni commute. The torsion dampers are not leaking and seem pretty solid, perhaps some play in the other end of the torsion rod where it goes into the control arm. On wednesday will get car up on stands and have a very good look at everything - bearings, shocks, bushes, steering rack, etc.

you say you whacked a curb, could be a buckled rim as accentstencil had previously suggested

On todays commute everything was fine - no vibration that could not be explained via bump steer, general feedback and steering kickback. Will see how it goes.
