    Default starter motor?

my commodore and my mates R33 both have the same issue.. when you start the car, mainly when its cold, it makes a grinding noise from the gearbox. i thught it was my flywheel and bearing thats stuffed and he thought it was his starter motor which actually makes more sense

    any ideas?

    nah man its a manual.

it only grinds when you first crank it. but yeah jonnoo i think your right and the noise is when the starter motor trys to disengage

It could also be bent or some teeth could be chipped off?

sounds like the the pinion gear on the starter is grinding on the flywheel when you start it. i know of a lot of old falcons that do this, and in 1 case the flexplate (flywheel for auto's) had to be replaced because it had almost no teeth. when you do your clutch, check the condition of the teeth on the flywheel as well. it might be a better option to replace the starter now incase you do more damage

um...if you read it again, i already had it that way around. the falcon with the damaged flexplate was an auto and i was meaning the flexplate was the laymans terms for the flywheel in an auto

I had the same problem with mine after my box got rebuilt. Sounded shocking for a while
(was worried it was flywheel/clutch because I had just spent $3,000 on the box and new HD clutch)
but it came good, still got a little noise but nothing major, mechanic told me if it starts getting louder
then I should just bite the bullet and get a new one.

yeah luckily for you it came good :P

but the weird thing is, i havent had issues with my starter.. except one time a few months ago where i got to work and then went to start it again and it wouldnt.. then i started it at lunch time with no hassle. other then that nothing. but this noise came out of no where
