hello everyone i have a 200 vt commodore s2 exec v6 sedan and lately i have been hearing the engine/or belt making a whooshing sound when idling and gets faster when i rev up. not sure how to describe the sound but sound like the belt is scraping on something or is too tight?
could it be the belt cause i had a feel of it and the top feels a bit sticky. dont know if that has to do with anything or not.
could it be one of the pulleys?
also i have noticed some splash of oil around engine bay not sure where it is coming from either cause car is still running great. just the sound of coming from engine bay can be annoying. only problem is when i checked last week the powersteering fluid was nearly empty so i topped it up with powersterring fluid to recommended amount.
any help would be greatly appreciated guys. need to get this sorted out cause that sound can get annoying when i am just idling.
The tension cant be too much as it adjust itself. I would say. Draw a diagram of the belt, and then remove it. Clean all the pulleys with a rag because there might be some gunk stuck to them. Also spin them by hand to check that all the bearings are ok, as a bad bearing can make this noise too. While the belts off, its probably best to replace it. Its around $30-$40 for a new belt.
it could well b ur idler pullies, take the belt off and spin them by hand, u can do the same with the alternators pulley 2 see if that needs doing also.
On the tensioner idler pulley theres 2 marks and an arrow that indicate if the belt is 2 tight or 2 loose n needs replacing, check that 4 piece of mind.

It may even be the brushes in the alternator...
Make yourself a backyard stethoscope, about 75-100cm of garden hose should do it (fuel or vacuum hose can be better, or any narrow tubing that is handy), put one end in your ear and go hunting for the source of the noise with the other. Be sure to chase any crawlies out of the hose first and watch out for that spinning belt as it will eat the hose and your fingers too!
