Hey guys.
Recently i picked up my VX Berlina Commodore $2500 (WIN!)
Just got the engine mounts changed new radiator and got the leaks in the Rockers fixed up.
But!...i have a very loud whine (as i would say it is any ways) coming form the belt assembly. (no shes not super charged)
I have ruled out just about everything it is deff not my AMP or subs making the noise, nor is it any of the stereo or Air con.
It was very faint before but still bloody annoying and now that i have taken it out in the wet its even worse.
Any idea'son what to do? i assume its the idler bearing (but im in IT and have been for 4 years so cars are new to me haha)
Also the next issue is the little cross in the middle of the air con dash and also little cross on the ride side of the far left LCD panel on the dash, does that mean anything to any one?
Thank you very much for any help.
Spray W40 onto pulleys, little cross means the fan is on (i think,)
you should get a obd2/tech2 thingo to read the error codes but from your description i reckon you have extremely awful and expensive aircon/heater box/climate issues that needs a dash out...
The X indicates a problem with the climate control and the only way to find the problem is to have it diagnosed.
The drive belts can get noisey, I've replaced mine but it still makes a noise especially especialy in moist conditions. Spraying it with WD 40 gets rid of it for a while but then it gets worse.
MY RIDE
I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
Dont spray the belt with WD40. Just dont, its not a good idea. You can but cans of stuff thats specifically designed for belts for a few bucks. This will not fix the problewm long term, just help you find the source of the noise.
Id start buy inspecting the belt for cracks and wear. Then maybe check to see if the tensioner is springing back like its meant to. Ive had one wear out which made the belt squeal like i bitch. Next spray belt grip or similar on each pulley to try to find exactly where the noise is coming from. If you still cant find it id start looking for bearing noise one the idler pulleys. You should be able to put a long screwdriver on the bolt in the center of each pulley and the other end up to your ear to listen for irregular noises.
Thats how id go about it anyway
ive had that little "X" in my LCD screen for 4 years... don't worry the car wont self destruct haha,
in all seriousness it hasn't affected my A/C or climate control at all, however my outside temp has never worked, apparently its 18 degrees no matter what lol
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
Well i never use the aircon unless its raining so ill forget about that issue.
But in regards to the belt ill pull it off this weekend and see whats going on thanks for the advice guys.
LAst night in the rain it got so much worse than it ever has been and today i noticed first gear change at 6K no noise. then into second gets so much worse haha.....(low revs it gets real loud) And is it a common thing for idler bearings to need replacing about now? 10 years after the car was made?
I have been told 7 years for the engine mounts and about the same for the radiators?
Changing pulleys aren't to expensive - mine were annoying squeaking whine.. the x on the climate might be like mine. my issue is the ambient sensor not working correctly. something of an over-voltage issue?. but it still works fine, cool and heat.
WALESY. mine sits at 21deg all the time.
