VX climate control out of control

my 2002 VX Calais series 2 5.7 litre is possesed.
the climate control comes on by itself with the passenger side adjusting itself up to H while the drivers side stays on what ever it was set on.
once it does this it takes a while until it can be turned down and then off.
5 minutes later it does it again and again and again.
Then it will stay off for weeks and suddenly start all over again.
It happens when its hot or cold weather but is terrible in summer with the full heat blowing onto the passenger.

Buy another climate control unit - lots of them on eBay for around $100 or less. Not too difficult to install although you need to remove quite a few things to get at it. Make sure you get a two zone version not the standard one.
