Hey guys this is proberly askd heaps but ive got a ticking noise from my engine, the guy at super cheap gave me 15-40 oil and i think its to low could any 1 suggest what oil i should get? Its a v8 as well so yea thanks
Id say its a "lifter" if the issue still happens after its had oil....
+1 to that. Mine's got a noisy lifter, usually a sign that the car has a) missed a service or 2 or b) has covered a large distances (i.e. mine)
Then again, with the age these cars are getting too, it's not surprising that the lifters are getting a bit noisy even if the above is not applicable.

When I light the nitro on my HQ 454 Monroe!
i have the same problem with my VS but it seems to do it on and off could it just be a loose screw ??
my vx does it aswell somtimes when you start it if it is warm u can hear a ticking noise then after 5 or so seconds it disappears, idles smooth even with that ticking for 5 seconds.
Wtf is a lifters?? Haha and its got all log books up to date tho, only done 164k kms.... And yea i havent put new oil in yet havent got round to it. Cheers every 1
Well obvioulsy start with the oil.. And I couldnt be arsed explaining what a lifter is..lol. (google it) When I replaced my lifters I made a noob mistake and didnt check the cam lobes for damage.. As it turns out a lobe was damaged and now its eaten away at the lifter again.... So I need a new cam and lifters![]()

I put this on a while ago but if you really want to know what can cause ticking in the top of your engine, here is what GMH has to say.
VALVE TRAIN
A light tapping at one half engine speed, or any varying frequency, can
indicate a valve train problem. These tapping noises increase with engine
speed.
Before attempting to judge valve train noises, thoroughly warm up engine.
By doing this you will bring all engine components to a normal state of
expansion. Also run the engine at various speeds and listen for engine
noise with the hood closed while sitting in the drivers seat.
If the valve mechanism is abnormally noisy, remove rocker arm covers and
use a stethoscope to determine which valves or valve train parts are
causing the noise.
Valve train noises may be caused by one or more of the following:
1. Broken or weak valve springs.
2. Sticking or warped valves.
3. Bent push rods.
4. Dirty, stuck or worn valve lifters.
5. Damaged or improperly machined camshaft lobes.
6. Insufficient or poor oil supply to valve train (low oil pressure).
7. Excessive valve stem to guide clearance.
8. Worn valve guides.
9. Worn push rods.
10. Worn rocker arms.
11. Broken rocker arm stud.
12. Loose or worn rocker arm attachments.
13. Missing or mis-positioned lifter guides.

Normal oil for a 5l V8 is 20W50 - Castrol Edge Sport 20W50 is a good oil at a reasonable price (even better on 20% off days at Repco, Supercheap etc.).
^^^^^ what he said.I get my oil when 20% off days are advertised and it seems to work in with my 5000 k oil changes
Helps a little when paying 70 odd dollars for castrol edge 10/60
I will not use any Castrol oils, after seeing what it done to this engine.
This car got regular services the whole engine and engine bay look new
Inside rocker cover
Stick with real oil 20-50 and leave the 15-40 for the rice burners
Dragon, that engine looks like it has had several interior engine fires

Iv used Castro.oil.for a long time that can't just be from the oil looks like hasn't been serviced for a long time I do mine max 10,000km in ky old v6 Vt my v8 5l Vt will get changed 5,000km I'm running a gtx 3 15/40. Also water has gotten into that motor to.
That ticking noise is common to hear in the older 5l like vn to vp. I Havnt heard it in mine few. Far as I know normal.means cam.lopes are worn out. So.must people just leave it
So will it damage my engine or is it just normal?!
Changed the oil in my vx today,Was well overdue for it.
Had the ticking noise before the change,Took it for a run after the change and it runs pretty sweet now.
No more ticking.
just changed the spark plugs in mine (don't know how old they are but they have been in there ever since i got it on 2010 lol) and the ticking has almost gone only a very slight tick and i changed the oil the other day after replacing the manifold gasket and that didn't change the sound
what oil did you use? like the brand and stuff?
I use 20-50 castrol is that ok??
