+1 to that. Mine's got a noisy lifter, usually a sign that the car has a) missed a service or 2 or b) has covered a large distances (i.e. mine)

Then again, with the age these cars are getting too, it's not surprising that the lifters are getting a bit noisy even if the above is not applicable.

Well obvioulsy start with the oil.. And I couldnt be arsed explaining what a lifter is..lol. (google it) When I replaced my lifters I made a noob mistake and didnt check the cam lobes for damage.. As it turns out a lobe was damaged and now its eaten away at the lifter again.... So I need a new cam and lifters

I put this on a while ago but if you really want to know what can cause ticking in the top of your engine, here is what GMH has to say.

    VALVE TRAIN

A light tapping at one half engine speed, or any varying frequency, can
indicate a valve train problem. These tapping noises increase with engine
    speed.
Before attempting to judge valve train noises, thoroughly warm up engine.
By doing this you will bring all engine components to a normal state of
expansion. Also run the engine at various speeds and listen for engine
noise with the hood closed while sitting in the drivers seat.
If the valve mechanism is abnormally noisy, remove rocker arm covers and
use a stethoscope to determine which valves or valve train parts are
    causing the noise.

Valve train noises may be caused by one or more of the following:

    1. Broken or weak valve springs.
    2. Sticking or warped valves.
    3. Bent push rods.
    4. Dirty, stuck or worn valve lifters.
    5. Damaged or improperly machined camshaft lobes.
    6. Insufficient or poor oil supply to valve train (low oil pressure).
    7. Excessive valve stem to guide clearance.
    8. Worn valve guides.
    9. Worn push rods.
    10. Worn rocker arms.
    11. Broken rocker arm stud.
    12. Loose or worn rocker arm attachments.
    13. Missing or mis-positioned lifter guides.

    Enjoy

Normal oil for a 5l V8 is 20W50 - Castrol Edge Sport 20W50 is a good oil at a reasonable price (even better on 20% off days at Repco, Supercheap etc.).

^^^^^ what he said.I get my oil when 20% off days are advertised and it seems to work in with my 5000 k oil changes

Helps a little when paying 70 odd dollars for castrol edge 10/60

I will not use any Castrol oils, after seeing what it done to this engine.
This car got regular services the whole engine and engine bay look new

    Inside rocker cover

Stick with real oil 20-50 and leave the 15-40 for the rice burners

It can't just be Castrol oil that did that, that engine has some serious other issues methinks.
