Hey guys
I own a 1998 VT wagon recently when going over speed humps and little bumps in the road there seems to be a knocking noise coming from the underside of the passenger (well sounds like thats where its coming from). at the very rear of the car
I have jacked up the car and nothing seems to be loose I mean the exhaust pipe has movement but I think thats how its designed as it has those rubber things at the end that act like springs.
Any ways im abit stuck so any help on helping me locate the problem or getting me to check certain parts that you think is the problem is much appreciated.
try jacking the car with a trolley jack under the diff and use a couple of stands still for safety and see if you can find the rattle.if the wheels are hanging while you looking for the problem your'e not even close to duplicating the conditions when you hear the noise.logical sources are still the same eg shocks, exhaust etc.if you still can't find it then it could be anywhere where there is a rubber bushing and i'm sorry but i don't know how to identify those problem areas but any mechanic with the aid of a bar and by doing a bit of pushing and pulling should be able to find it with the car on a hoist.good luck.
And if you want to try to find it yourself, put the back of the car up on ramps, block the front wheels in front and behind then get under with aforementioned bar/tyre lever and start pushing things around. You will probably find that the noise is a shot bush or more unusual, loose nut/bolt. Check your rubber exhaust hangers as well. From memory there are 4 of them. Worn link pin bushes, worn shock absorber bushes. Hope you find it as it will be cheaper than paying someone $80 to $120 an hour for something you can do yourself.
