Ive seen it alot of cams like this in heavy diesels, hard to tell off pictures but it looks like the case hardening has worn away allowing severe wear and tear, chances are the roller on the lifter is badly pitted as well (may have even seized).

hey johnno, is your engine number between VF010010001 and VF011520001 ?? theres a techline back in 03 about revised lifter guides because lifters were cocking sideways and chewing lobes off cams....
or better still, have a look at the lifter guides and tell me if theres a number "10" stamped in the middle of it?? if theres not 10 there, buy some new lifter guides

Hi Boonz... The above is an interesting bit of info, that is a huge range of numbers, I just checked my 2001 VX SS engine number and it is a about midway into that range, so that range would probably take in most of the LS1's up to around the start of the VY. Mine seems very quiet was it just odd motors here and there that had issues? Wouldn't mind having a read of the techline bulletin.

nah thats only 4 months of production in the vx, from 01/01/01 to 01/05/01
the techline number is TL0604-0311 , ask your local holden dealer to print it out, cos i cant show techlines on the net unfortunately

Thanks Boonz... Much appreciated, will see if I can get a copy from the dealer, mine seems ok but wouldn't mind a read.

took off the drivers side head and got to the lifter trays, the stuffed lobe is from the passenger side. i want to replace the lifter trays as they are plastic and im guessing the passenger side one with the stuffed lobe is either a shagged lifter or the tray has split and let the lifter turn sideways like you said boonz. btw there is only a nine stamped underneath nothing anywhere else.

got the passenger side head off and to my surprise there was no stuffed lifter or lifter guide. i dont know how the cam lobe got shagged then?? by the way do the lifters sit in the guide all the time and just move up and down while still in contact with the guide. what is to stop them from turning if they drop off the bottom of the guide?
