Just pulled the engine and trans out of my son's VT to replace the rear main and sump gaskets. Put it all back in, I THINK everything's connected, but when we go to start it, nothing and tested, no power to starter motor.
Tried moving the selector through different gears in case it was the neutral start button, but no difference.
Does the plug on the passenger's side of the transmission have anything plugged into the smaller plug at the bottom? The top plug on this goes to the motor wiring, but there was a smaller plug underneath with nothing in it, may have unplugged itself when we were removing the motor but didn't see anything under there. Or is it a spare for something else?
Thanks.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
small plug is for gear lights on dash (higher models only)
did you remember to plug in the small two pin plug near the battery? has a purple and a brown.
if the battery light doesn't come on the dash when ignition turned on, i'd say it's that.
The car's up at the mate's place who helped us do the job, so I'll ring him and get him to check that. Good to know the bottom plug can be ruled out, thanks Wamboin23.

....Mental note to self: Don't put gear selector on upside down..............

its a pretty insignificant thing too, but check the starter fuse (10amp) under the steering column, and the starer relay in the engine bay. if either of these have popped or if the fuse especially isnt pushed in 100%, it can cause the starter not to turn, but all other power works. my starter fuse was just a smidge crooked, and my car would only start once about every 5-10 tries.
so happy i found that before going to a mechanic.
yep i've done that before.
park was 1, and 1 was park lol. couldnt work out why the gears were all over the place.
