Detailing Engine

Hey guys,

I've been working on the engine at the moment to get it looking better, as you can see the plenum being the biggest and most obvious thing was first lol:



However beneath the plenum, the pipes leading to the block, are very dirty with 13 years of gunk. It's not quite as accessible as the top of the plenum lol, has anyone got any tips or tricks to cleaning them?

pipes? as in the runners?

Everything between the top of the plenum and the block lol.

Yeah ok when I cleaned mine I sprayed everywhere with degreaser and left if for 10 mins then got a little steel brush and scrubbed all in their: it's a real pain and takes time then just guerni it after. To make it easy it's not hard to remove the plenum and get in their though

I just had a thought, old toothbrush might help get into the nooks that my abnormally large hands can't. Might have a go next weekend when I'm off. Apart from the alternator are there electrical parts near the plenum I should be mindful of? I noticed 6 plugs with wires, I'm guessing they're some kind of sensor. Sorry I'm still new to all this and trying to learn as much as I can.

I tried a toothbrush first but found it wasn't stiff enough so I used a wire brush. If you want to remove the plenum to make it easier all you have to do is remove plenum lid disconnect the throttle body sensors,hoses and actual throttle body then remove the plenum. The fuel rail and injectors come with it as one. Very important you cover your runners while the plenum is off because if you drop anything down their it will have to be retrieved. It's a lot easier than it sounds but if your not confident I would just clean it with the plenum on. I did and it came up good.

And also when guerning it down try to avoid things like battery,coil packs,sensors etc. It's ok to get some water on most stuff just make sure you let it all dry for a few hours. A mate of mine took off 15 mins after he high pressured his engine and ended up blowing a coil pack. Once its dry crank her over and let her run and get warm as the heat will evaporate whatever small traces of water is left.

Thanks mate, I'll probably leave the plenum in, I'm not THAT confident yet- I'll get there eventually. Thanks for the advice too, and don't worry once it's been cleaned she'll sit there for a few hours, I'm gonna do it next weekend when I've got plenty of time.
