VX rear brakes smelly

I've had new slotted rotors and pads fitted all round at a brake place and have noticed that some times when I get out of the car the rear brakes smell strange. I've travelled 2,500 klms down to the Coolangatta hot rod festival and after travelling 700klms home yesterday I had no smell but after going 8klms into town today I had that smell so I'm thinking maybe this smell is normal while the brakes are settling in or does it sound like something else.

What does it smell like? If' i's like an old train smell, then that's them settling in, but if they were bedded in correctly, this should only happen when you are on the brakes hard.

Its like the old train smell and its on a mountain type road so I'd say its ok but since its 300klms to where I had the brakes renewed I'll have to wait 2 weeks before my next RDO.

did your brakes get wet at all in the 8km journey? (go through any puddles?) I went through one the other day in my vy and got a nasty smell off my brakes.

Did you fit the brakes and rotors? If so, how did you bed them in?

I fitted new pads last Saturday. 30 minutes later I had smoke billowing off them, now they are perfect, but it can vary from one pad to another as far as their recommended bedding in proceedure is

All bedding in does is condition the pads so they are ready for use.You usually just need to do a few stops from 60 -70 kp/h down to around 10 km/h ,but not come to a complete stop,you gotta let your foot straight off the brake pedal,and you gotta keep the vehicle moving so theres no heat soak from the discs back into the new pads,after youve done these stops about 6 times in a row,drive the car steadily along, (probably for a minute or two),without braking, until all the built up heat in the brake discs has been dissipated,and theyve had a chance to cool right down.Now the pads can be considered "bedded in".

bedding in brake pads means taking it for a drive and do some heavy braking i believe.. brake pads have a clear coat kinda thing on them and you have to get it off pretty much

It was pouring bucket loads at Coolangatta but nothing comming back and yes wet going to town today, I had new hub bearings and DBA standard slotted rotors and the Bendix general CP pads fitted by Pedders. The brakes feel great and now thinking about it they only have the smell when its wet and no futher smell this afternoon but then again its dry now..

Update 26.06.11: No further smell from the brake either in the rain or in the dry and this slotted brakes are great with the camper on.
