Default Grinding noise on rear brake rotors

Heard this gawd awful grinding noise when i pulled into the driveway today. I thought i had ran over a rock. When i pulled up into the garage the grinding sound was louder and seem to coming from the rear. I noticed the rear braker rotor on the driver side had 'abnormal' wear. Looks jagged but not cracked and the other rear passenger brake rotor was looking shiny. Seems to be ok.
Are my brake pads worn down? What is possibly scraping the brake rotors? Are my calipers stuck together? I took the car for a short drive and the car does feel a bit 'sluggish'
I'm thinking of disassembling the rear barkes and taking a look. hope its just worn out brake pads. Do I have to skim the brake rotors when fitting in the new brake pads? do i have to change the brake oil too?

sounds like you have worn the brake pads out, and when you brake your ####ing your rotor, because there are no pads there so its basically using the rotor as pad.

dont drive it anywhere but to your local brake shop, your discs will need to be machined and have new pads fitted.

ooooo...you are 100% right. I'm killing my rotors by grinding the already worn out pads. I'l go check tomorrow for OEM brake pads and skim the rears a bit. How much do i have to skim the rear rotors? 2-3mm? they are fairly thick at the moment

Are they just standard rotors? Its about the same price to get new ones as it is to machine them, and I know which I would prefer.

    ^ this

yeah they shouldn't need to much, if the grinding problem has only just started. but when you get the wheel and calliper off you should see how much it needs.

next time make sure to check your pads every time your service

I think half the VT VX's i pass sound like their grinding something inside the wheels.. even the hubs go rusty and send back chatter.

its hardly worth machining rotors in my oppinion, you lose brake material less rotor to absorb heat=faster brake fade.

plus the cost of machining vs replacing its barely worth doing.

I havent checked the cost of machining the brake rotors but the thing is...OEM rotors for the VX here will take about a month to be 'special ordered' from Australia. I'm not sure which brake brake rotors are compatible with the VX, so it seems...at least for now...machining seems to be a temporary solution

You could try pricing aftermarket parts? If it's been grinding with no
Pad there's a pretty good chance it's already below the minimum thickness

I too had a noise suddenly start on my rear left wheel when I braked. Had a look and both pads had detached from the backing plate on that side even though there was still 50% pad left on them. Checked other side and it hadn't detached, but I replaced both sides anyway.

Have heard two other incidents of this occurring in the last two weeks, from a VS, VT and well mine is VY.

What brand of pad is this happening with?I always use ferodo or bendix brand pads and have not had any problems with either one.I go through a set of pads usually in about 9 -12 months as I like to brake pretty hard a lot of the time..
