Hey VT fans,
I need to replace the clock spring for my steering wheel airbag. Is there a thread on how to do this with guided steps? ...or is it just worth getting someone who knows what they're doing to do it?
Cheers,
Joe

I don't know if there is a how to but if you buy a Gregory's manual for around $40 it will tell you how to do it and you won't have to pay someone to do it, and the manual will come handy over and over again. I wouldn't be without one.

^^^^ agreed 100%.These workshop manuals are a bible to me,I wouldnt be without mine. They save so much $$$$.
i got quoted only $280 to fix this by holden ($160 for a new clockspring, and $120 labour). im not sure if you need to get the airbag light reset after changing it, but if so, it makes sense to get it done by holden. as a clockspring is a fairly common wearing part, new is better than second hand. at this price, i would save myself the effort and pay to get it done.
if you are only new to fixing commodores, the proceedure for doing this job yourself by a workshop manual might be tricky for you. then again, if you are very mechanically minded, you should be fine
190 bucks!!! i musta been quoted an extra 90 bucks sucker tax...
maybee ill ring back for another quote on the part from another dealership. im thinking im being charged highest for the part, probably labour is a bit much too. shouldnt be 2 hrs for them guys, just one

oh ok. lucky i read it after business hours and didnt try calling to get a better price.... i dont think i woulda gotten anywhere with further discounting
i may have gotten a few bucks off already ,because i told the spare parts counter, the service guys told me to call them to get the price on the part for them to fit it.
strange that the holden service guys didnt know the part price automatically when i asked for a quote to fix it. they just gave me the labour price and told me to ring the parts counter and add the price of the part. slackers!![]()
did this about a month or so ago. easy as to do it yourself, holden will tell you that a mechanic needs to do it as you need to remove the steering wheel. dont bother its easy.
1.disconnect battery first just to make sure the airbag wont bow up in your face.
2.remove the airbag from the rear. (with a torx key set)
3. you will see a single bolt. find the right sized socket and undo it. make sure you get someone to hold the wheel in the straight position.
4. unclip 3 clips that power airbag horn and steering wheel buttons (if you have them). make sure you look at where you unclipped them from. they need to be tucked away when you put it all back together.
5. you will see the clock spring pull it out, put the new one in and reverse the steps putting it back together.
hope this helps mate.
good luck
Thanks heaps guys! And thank you Vnathanx for explaining it in great detail. really do appreciate itI just want to be able to get my VT on the market as I am buying a 06 S Thunder

I've just had the same problem happen.
Off the top of his head, the auto electrician said about $300 fully fitted. I then rang around for quotes on the part, and holden is cheapest at $165 for my calais. Went back to the auto, and he said about $260 for the job.
I'm happy to pay that, as I'm not the most mechanical minded bloke around.
