I want to replace the clutch fluid as it is black and has some lumps in the resevoir!
Ive done a bit of searching just want to be sure on how its done.
Is this correct for the LS1??
" you can do it the same as you would bleed the brakes on the car, its a bit difficult though as there is a small opening on the LHS of the bellhousing. you will need a 1/4 drive ratchet with a 13mm tube socket or a 1/4 ratchet with uni joint and tube socket (could be wrong with the size as i did mine ages ago) and bleed it like you would bleed the brakes. HEAPS easier on a hoist!"
If not how is it done?
Theres a few ways to do it, all with varying amounts of speed and quality.
2 of the best methods are 'back-bleeding', or pressure/vacuum bleeding. I personally use pressure bleeding to do mine. Makes it about a 15 minute job that you can do by yourself. Checked out a Gunson Eezibleed for the perfect tool.
Replacing the clutch fluid is made a little tricky because of the location of the bleed nipple on the slave cylinder which is inside the bell housing. Best suggestion is to install an Xtreme Extended Clutch Bleeder part number CSCGM011-EXTBL. I purchased one recently from Bursons for $17. Remove the old bleeder by using double sided tape inside a long 7/16" socket (to make sure the old one doesn't slip inside the bell housing). Slide in the extended bleeder and make sure you fully tighten the new bleeder before loosening it slightly for the bleed. It winds in quite a long way. You can then bleed the clutch in the same way as you do brakes - siphon out the old fluid from the clutch master cylinder (I use a turkey baster !!!), mop the remaining junk out of the master cylinder using a rag or kitchen paper, fill with new fluid and bleed. Make sure you keep up the fluid level in the master cylinder because the capacity of the cylinder is only sufficient for about three pumps of the clutch pedal.
