Use the brakes. It's cheaper to replace brakes than to replace/rebuild a transmission.

The auto is not really made to change gears manually...
Simply using the brakes will suffice, or as aaron said, you'll
end up needing a new transmission

i use the auto to back down the gears in our VX and no problems so far. did it in my old VR, my VN, my other VN, no probs. and never had to rebuild an auto....

it also more economical as under vacuum there is no fuel used. even when coasting down a hill ur using fuel, try backing down to third and watch the fuel use drop to zero.

Third will just get out of over drive. Going third second etc is just silly. If you want a manual get one.

    Brakes are designed to brake.

Using a gearbox with revers loading (decelerating) wears the back face of the hypoidal sun gears in the trans. This reduces the amount of torque they can handle in the forward direction.

really? so does that mean that backing down gears and using the clutch to slow you down in a manual wears the backs of those teeth too thus reducing the torque they can handle in forwards gears?

what i was meaning with my initial post, if your driving a bit harder than average, and you need better braking than just the wheels, backing down the gears helps to slow up the car.

and the other part, if your cruising at 100km and are coasting down a hill, the engine is idling on the torque converter, if you drop it back to third, it loads up the converter and puts drag on the engine making vacuum which then uses zero (O) fuel while in that state. then ud click back to drive when the road flattens and you havent picked up 20km/h from coasting down the hill.

Automatic boxes are not designed to be used as a form of braking under normal driving conditions... Call up an auto box specialist and see what he has to say about it.

Brakes, much cheaper than a transmission to replace. Auto are simply not designed to be used that way.

auto's and manuals are completely different!! manuals you dont wear anything out by downshifting... hence why its safe to do it

my cousins old vp needed a new transmission even though when he first bought it, it was fine.. then he started using the gears.

Don't drive harder than average and pay attention to the road and cars ahead and your brakes shouldnt need help stopping the car.

If all else fails, rip on the handbrake or slam it in reverse.

So,you figure the time it takes you to realise you need to stop quicker, put your hand on the AUTO shifter and then slam it down gears then wait a farking month for it to engage the gears and then slow down, all while your stepping on the brake as per usual?

Sounds like some people just wish they had a manual to me....
