Default Commodore inspected write off help..

Hey guys so i went to look at this car on the weekend and the car is amazing has nice sound drives well the guy who has it has looked after it but before i went to buy it i checked it on vicroads and it said it was a inspected write-off i called the guy up and he didnt know anything about it so i got the guys number he bought it from and he said the interior was all burnt and had to be replaced. I got photos of the burnt interior and that but i cant understand how something like that can be a write off... Is this common?

    Thanks in advance =)

    wow that is clean,
From what i could find out Inspected write means that the car has been declared a repairable write off, then someone has fixed it an re-registered it.

pretty sure you can't comprehensive insure a write-off but you can third party it

the problem is this car will ALWAYS have the taint of a repairable write off

so IMO cars like this should have a massive discount for that alone

    ^^^My thoughts exactly.
This history will stay with the car for life so you need to also consider your possible future resale value and the likely many customers that will be steered away based on this (or like yourself a little uncertain). Without seeing the exact extent to the interior damage, I would consider buying such a car, but of course it would have to be priced accordingly.

probably needed a new cluster after fire so i would not trust odometer reading
if fire was recent may still have undiagnosed/unrepaired problems

No offense mate, but there's no way in hell I'd pay 9.5k for that. The guys above are spot on, the cluster would probably have been changed so it's a bit suss that it has low k's, you just couldn't trust it. I'd keep shopping around for that money.

Nah i called the guy this guy bought it off (so the guy who repaired it then sold it off..) and he said he didn't need to touch that also the fire was 2 years ago and it wasn't like flames out the windows or anything...

i'm not paying 9,5 for it before we found about this we got him to 8,9 but considering this write off shit now i was thinking 8.7.... also the k's can be belived becuase of the write off it was stuck in the auction place for awhile..

if there was no structural damage and the cluster hasn't been changed then you should be alright, but I would use it as a bargaining tool, see if he can knock the price off a little bit. super tidy car though.

if the car is good and has a normal service record i'd consider it

but the reality is you have to go thru all this bullshit again with the next guy who wants to buy it

i reckon the seller is dodge if he reckons "he didn't know" about the repairable write off status

what happened when he bought it? did he not notice when he transferred rego? load of crap IMO

No. plenty of work goes into repairing these write offs. i know as mine was one. and for what i went through to have it placed back on the roads is nothing short of what a new car goes through in building. actually, these cars are inspected twice as much by independent people that go beyond those quality lol testings the car makers do.

Besides all that. i think it's a little to expensive to be honest.

whether it's well presented or not is besides the point

once you have a black mark on the registraton, it's always there

if you spend enough money of course you can fix anything

I wouldn't call it a black mark. better to know the cars been in an accident than it's been thrashed abused chopped and shut and you have no clue of it. it's very rare you are able to find out the worst that's happen to a car. take it as a bonus. besides todays cars are repaired beyond factory standards with the right paper work to back it.

If a car has been deemed a repairable write off, and it has been repaired to the correct standard, then there is/should not be anything to worry about. They have to be checked over hardcore to be removed from the written off vehicle registry.
as long as it has been repaired properly, there is no worry.
I should know, as i have repaired quite a few repairable write offs in my time as a panel beater. They go over them with a fine tooth comb

So true. your work decides if it's going to be registered again.

I just had my silver vt fixed up an got the repairable write off status removed cost me $450 an i asked the inspector what he looks at, an he said they look at the damage an how it was repaired measure it all etc.
An they also inspect the rest of the vehicle an make ensure nothing is out of place an that also includes tho odometer reading.

If anything doesn't match up or it wasn't fixed to a high standard then it fails. No ifs buts or maybes.

Definitely a lot harder then getting a standard road worthy.

If the cost of repairing a car is too expensive compaired to its market walue it is deemed a repairable writeoff . So a car can be structurally sound as the one in question is but replacing the seats ,carpet ,rooflining and all the other bits and pieces can be more expensive than its worth especially with the cost per hour for labour.Where as you can buy a repairable writeoff and buy second hand parts and rebuild it over time without the high labour cost and you can end up with a decent car .
there are three types of people in the world , those who can count and those who can't
