this happened on the way home on a freeway. I thought it was the transmission but the car changed gears smoothly. the sound would accompany the revs in the engine but would totally disappear when the air conditioning is switched off. whats happening?![]()
that would be the sound of the air compressor for the AC engaging
Sounds as though the AC compressor clutch is on the way out.
AC compressor clutch? Can this unit be replaced separately? or do i have to shop around for a new compressor? Its mighty expensive...
MY RIDE
I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
It's probably the tensioner making the actual noise, this would be because the clutch on the compessor is tight putting too much tension on the belt. Either that or the comprressor itself is stuffed. Remove the belt and spin the AC pulley to see if it is noisy, then turn the AC on and then see if it can still spin relatively easy. It will be tighter, but it will be tight/loose/tight/loose, if it is just tight all the time, it may be shot.

When you regass the system there should be oil added in the air-conditioning system this will go through the system as a lubrication for the parts.
Could be the compressor internals or clutch as stated above.
Had a similar noise in my VT, replaced the belt and the noise disappeared. I could swear I had a rooted idler pulley.( knew it wasn't air cond compressor-I replaced that 6 months ago).
same thing happened to my commy, and yes it's the compressor clutch.
