Default Few Oil leak, Prices to be fixed

Hey guys took my car to the mechanic and got told i have a few oil leaks and bits and bobs over the show, was just wondering if someone could give me a rough idea on the costs on getting these fixed.

    New muffler
    Oil leak in tappet covers
Left hand steering rack leaking oil
and an oil leak at the steering rack...zzzzzz

will they need to replace the steering rack? i was told he might not need to. (i hope not)

    any help would be awesome.

    Thanks Dan.

muffler, shouldnt be more than $100 i would guess
dunno about the oil leak in tappet covers (not a clue )
well, if your steering rack is already leaking, it might be worth trying some power steering stop leak ($20)
otherwise youlle probably be looking at some dollar amount with 2 or possibly 3 0's in the number (and at the rear of the number unfortunately) to replace the rack. pretty bogus stuff. u should try to ring around and get some different quotes on getting the rack done. u might get some varience in quotes. try a power steering specific place for example, as well as other mechanics.

Where abouts in QLD mate? Fulcrum priced my $500 for a reco steering rack with alignment and with a warranty, for my VX.

A pair of rocker cover gaskets will be cheap from Holden and will take all of 5 minutes to fit.

$150 for a muffler to supply and fit. And rocker (tappet) covers are $30 a pair from Holden! More expensive elsewhere and there piss easy to change

yeah thats around the amount if he was to do it himself i wouldnt of thought the mechanic would charge 500 for labour + 500 for new one, hence why i said 3 0's (1000) is a bit outrageous

Racks are pretty easy to replace yourself, two main mount bolts, the steering shaft bolt, the the two oil lines and the tie rods. If you do it yourself you will need a wheel alignment done after.

yeah, i was just taking into account the last mechanic i went to gave me a quote to do the p/s pump. he quoted me $380. when i said wtf? he told me $120 for labour and $260 to get the pump recoed. i reckon his recoing price was a lot lower and he just gave me that breakdown to get out of looking like he was trying to rip me. as i went and bought a recoed non change over pump for a hundred bucks that week. lol. point being, mechanics can vary from awesome and honest to shonkey pirates pretty much. im sure the guys i went to for the pump quote woulda said $1000 for a rack reco for sure.... maggots
anyway, i probly got my panties in a bit of a twist the other day anyway, so sorry if i acted like a bit of a knobhead
