225/55/R16 tyres on a VX should they fit

I needed a couple of tyres replaced on the VX sedan so I bought 4 of the VE steelies and had the new front and rear hubs machaned to fit the rim centres and then purchased a pair of the 225/55/R16 tyres because in here I read they are the best fit for the VX but I've sat them up against the rear wheel arch and they don't go under by about 3mm.
The cars been lowered to the next low height from the standard height so I'm worried they may be too large or will the fit once the rims and tyres and mounted onto the hubs under the wheel well.
I tried to remove the rear tyres yesterday so to install the new rear hubs but I'll have to buy a rubber mallet because the rims are so tight over the original rear hubs and its a good thing I never had a flatty on the highway in the 2 years I've had the VX.
So in short will they fit or are they too high and wide.

I'm pretty sure the standard alloys on my VX Calais wore 225/55/R16.

That's police size anyway, no problem.

Excellent so they will fit just have to get the original rims off first.
