I think as long as you can still tell which ones are the brake/reverse/indicator/tail light and you don't cover up the reflector, it's ok. Depends on which cop pulls you over though.
Why would you want to anyway? It looks gay.

while this is true, i think the law is (here in WA anyway) is you have to be able to see the lights from 200m away.
so a very very light shade is ok i think, not sure.
i wouldnt be worried so much about getting stickered as much as someone rear ending you and your insurance company voiding your insurance.
I got a caution for this a few years ago so I rang regency park to find out why it was illegal because when I was comparing the back end of my car with the back end of the cop car that pulled me over you could clearly see my lights were as the with the cop car you couldn't tell (I reckon that's why I only got a caution because even the copper was confused), this was on a 40 degree day with the full sunlight on the back of our cars.
I will say I couldn't stop laughing at the excuse the guy at regency park gave me, apparently it's illegal because it changes the intensity of the red. I gave him all the usual comments you would at this point like it's still red though, red means I'm braking no matter what kind of red it is, it's still clear when I brake that I'm braking and my favorite one was when I told him about the comparison with the cop car I did and even offered to bring my car down to prove it but he stuck to his guns about it having to be that specific kind of red and nothing else mattered.
Bottom line is it is illegal so if you do it you will more than likely be pulled over for it one day.
It has nothing to do with which cop pulls you over as to weather they are legal or not. The only difference is weather they use their disgression (sp?) in fining you/putting the car off the road or not.
Check out the vicroads website. There are ADR's applicable to all lights with regards to colour and luminosity.
Reaper
you would have to get the lights tested against the relevant ADR at a cost of around $500 , or else they are illegal as they are no longer ADR compliant
Brighter the better for me!...I don't want some brain dead, drugged out retard running up my arse and saying that they didn't see my tail lights.
