So my mate turns up with another car today for me to fix and its got a bad knocking sound. When the car is cold it seems normal all bar the flickering oil light on the dash and then after about 3k's of driving you hear a loud knocking sound.
He picked the ute up for 8 grand so he isn't fussed on spending some coin on it if he has to.
Could it be a blocked pick up, a dodgy oil pump, loose rocker or maybe even a rod?
Have a listen to it on the video link. ‪LS1 knocking noise?‬‏ - YouTube
mate dont start it again! sounds as though the lifters arent getting enough pressure and are probably now farked along with a cam lobe maybe. has he done anything that required the oil pump to be removed? the oil light coming on is because there is less than 10 psi of oil pressure, does it disappear if you rev it a little?
does it make that sound with out the belt on the front? my water pump pully was floppen all ova the place with no belt on and it did make a knocking sound when cold and idling! just a thought
mine done the same thing bout 4 months ago, lasted mins and hasnt happened again so ill be interested to see what comes of yours... same sound, coming from the same side
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
Just take the belt off when it's cold, if the sound is gone then that's the problem
the pump is in behind the timing cover, you'll need a pulley puller and some gasket maker. if the engine hasnt been touched ie; cam etc, i would think the oil pump is buggered and not getting enough pressure to the lifters, this noise is common after doing a cam change, lifters, pushrods etc but disappears as oil pressure builds up and lifters pump up properly.

Yes I know, if you get anymore manly you are in danger of making yourself pregnant!
Try rocking the motor from side to side Whilst it is off and see if you can get it to rattle at all.
I just had a cam change in my car and it made a rattle a bit like that every now and then from the right side bank.
Turned out the starter motor heat shield had come loose and was knocking against one of the metal lines as the engine
Shook from side to side.
Edit: just read oil light comes on so probably not as simple as a heat shield unfortunately.
WOW!!!!
Spring/Lifter/Rocker has failed, even a pushrod is bent... worse case senario is a srping has failed and the rocker is bashing the top of the valve/pushrod all while the valve is smashing the top of the piston. Rebuild time...
Take the coilpacks off, remove the rocker covers and check the top of the valve train for anything lose or broken, should only take you 15-30min... you should see something similar to this(I found a retainer failed while I was changing to 1.8 roller rockers...) and you should not be able to move the rockers of pushrods by hand.

ok, cheers boys... I went turned it over again last night and it sounded normal and had to drive it for about 15 minutes before the oil light came on and then made the horrible nose you hear in the video.
With this in mind im guessing its the oil pump giving out for some reason?
Will a dodgy pump give out more so when the oil is thinner by any chance?
true, but a lifter could still have failed and not be noisy. i reckon the noise is a lifter because of low oil pressure, my motor sounded exactly the same after i replaced the lifters, but only for a few seconds until the lifters pumped up with oil. 14.5 hours! what a joke, you may have to drop the sump a little so you can get the pickup bolt back on, BE CAREFUL NOT TO DROP IT INTO SUMP, i did three times when i was fitting DR timing chain, and had to drain oil, lift motor so i could get enough clearance to get the bolt out. get a pen magnet just to be safe. this is great how to, you should be able to follow the oil pump part
Sounds like my engine before it packed up. :\
[Update] Well I told him that it was more then likely the oil pump but couldn't be sure. It has 250k+ on the clock so I convinced him to replace the engine and he has since agreed to part with the funds.
After all, the low oil pressure has probably caused more damaged to an already flogged out engine.
And in regards to the time spent on removing and replacing an oil pump it would actually be quicker replacing the engine.
I always wanted an ls1 in my boat, just didn't imagine it was going to be used as an anchor![]()
quicker to replace an engine than an oil pump??? dont know where you heard that from mate there pretty simple
i can see how they would charge that much! pain in the ass with the sump. are you basing your 4 hour changeover on different motors youve changed, because you said you havent worked on a ls1 before. they really are a simple motor in my opinion, i have never changed a motor before so i wouldnt know but if mine ever blew i would definately have a crack, and would be hitting you up for some tips!
Yeah done plenty of Aussie 5ltrs, and its all the same pretty much. I just gotta get an extra set of eys on the engine bay when removing it so I dont snag anything on the way up. I'll let you know by lunch tomorrow how I went mate.
pumps around $500 bucks mate and its a 3-4 hour job... why change the motor ?
Only push bike's have 2 peddles !
I ment pump and labour $500 ish... not really a home job
