Thumbs down WH V6 leaking oil

My WH Statesman has done almost 200,000kms. Last service I done at 190,000kms, the engine was completely dry and there wasn't a drop of oil around the engine.

I'm going to carry out the 200,000km service on the weekend but I put the car on the hoist because I just got an exhaust system fitted and in the morning when the engine was cold, it made a bad vibration. I found and fixed that problem, but while it was on the hoist, the engine sump was covered in oil and there was about 10 drops about to drip down.

I can't work out exactly where it's coming from, I thought it was coming from the rear main or sump gasket because it doesn't look higher then that.

Now, the Statesman has never towed anything in its life, until, I bought the new engine for my VS and have used the Statesman to pick up the engine, and take it to work, then home, etc. Does anyone think that the extra stress on the engine has done damage somehow? It made a big difference towing, it lost heaps of power and was revving hard all the time.

If towing has done any damage to the engine at all, then i'm never using the Statesman to tow ever again. I'm actually considering buying a ute to use for carrying stuff around.

Anyway, anyone know why there would be heaps of oil on the sump all the sudden? Oh and also, I noticed that there is a green liquid coming out of the bottom of the A/C compressor, will I need a new one of those as well?

Green fluid from A/C compressor is the dye, so yes. Your A/C Compressor, or one of the lines near it is leaking.

As for oil leak, it could be a loose oil filter, or the oil pressue switch may be leaking and blowing back

Yeah I had the A/C regased earlier this year and I think they did put that dye in it. I knew it wasn't coolant anyway haha.

With the oil, its completely dry near the filter and oil pressure switch, the oil is on the back half of the sump and running down where the sump goes down if you know what I mean. When I lift it back up on the hoist on the weekend, if the oil is back there again, I will take a photo and upload it.

Could be the oil gallery bung on the drivers side at the front blowing down down and back, give it a pressure wash and see, if the front of the engine is dry your looking at a sump gasket or rear cover/main, or one very rooted rocker cover gasket. Im gonna take a stab and guess gallery bung.
And towing will not harm an engine unless you let it, it does strain the engine a little more then normal but unless its starts to overheat its not going to blow it up/cause leaks.

Oh ok, the engine temperature was on normal the whole time so it might be ok then. I'll have a look for this gallery bung. I replaced both rocker cover gaskets and the rubbers that are on the rocker cover bolts when I bought the car because they were leaking but they still look fine.

I had a look at the oil on the dip stick and it is right between the full and low mark, I thought that was pretty good because it's done almost 10,000kms since the last service and I haven't had too top it up yet. The oil that is leaking is also very black but it doesn't look too bad on the dip stick.

When it's up on the hoist, ill service it and give the engine a pressure wash, then ill re-check it again after i've done about 800 - 1000kms.

Pffft might be ok, lol. your engine is going to be fine.

Practically all oil leaks are black, no matter how clean you oil is. It doesnt take much oil to make a large mess, to notice it on the dipstick it would have to be hosing out, and to be hosing out i would almost guarantee that the main oil gallery bung is lose as sumps gaskets and rear mains dont commonly do that.
In this pic you can just see the bung, its right at the front near the bottom above the black hole:

Oh ok, ill have a look at that.

I just think that it's strange that everything was perfect, next thing I look under and theres oil about to drip off the sump.... I hope it's not the rear main, I already have jobs planned for when i'm on holidays for the rest of the year. But it needs to be alright because its going to be the only car I can drive for 2 years once my VS is off the road.

I use to tow with my Statesman all the time, the S/C 6 and box is a strong combination.
As for the leak it's just a case of clean and inspect until you find it?
