Default VT ISSUES, ENG KNOCKING, SLUGGISH, ROUGH, not head gaskets??

    Hi,

Posting on behalf of a mate

he has a VT Ecotec V6,
    had a blown head gasket
has had the heads off and gaskets replaced, new radiator, new plugs, filter, oil, thermostat, coolant, ignition leads.

After all of this, the engine runs rough as, shakes really bad on idle, exhaust smells really rich, engine is gutless as.

Have a few hunches but hope someone has had more experience on this subject.

    Cheers for any advice

Sounds like you need to check for an error code. check out the below thread on a 'how to' if you dont already know.

Get back to us on any error codes that come up. you may get more help then.

maybe check your engine mounts to? to check them push your engine to one side (not to hard) and the rattle might stop if not try the other side (eg: left and right) and if the rattle stops or the knocking youve lost an engine mount.

I'm surprised you said you replaced the head gaskets because I had a VP Commodore and It never had head gaskets just metal to metal so has the modern ones changes.

sounds to me (gutless) that the compression is prob gone on the engine.
Time to replace the engine, all that work sounds like it wasnt well looked after. (or had 300,000km+ on it)

I know this might sound dumb, but check to make sure the ignition leads have been connected in the correct order (i.e. coil packs to spark plugs). What you are describing sounds like a couple of leads are in the incorrect order.

When the heads were taken off, a quick look from the top of the pistons and look around the edges would have given some idea if the compression was gone. So will a compression test when they squirt the oil in etc to check for that. Mine was a lil rough after doing the heads few weeks ago, but seems to have smoothed out really well now. Could be the ECU running in the new heads etc. Remember its all clean around the valves etc, better seal on the heads. But it seems more of a ignition or vacuum leak to me. Also look at Oxy sensors or other sensors around the throttle etc.

I would put money on this being the case
