Hey guys.
Today i was replacing my rear shocks to relise that theres oil coming outta the tail shaft were it connects to the diff.
My question is. How hard is it to replace?
Reason is im in the middle of getting it ready and im losing time very fast before summernats!!.
Sooo any help would be great!
Are you showing the car and it's most likely a seal so any mechanic place could replace this for next to nothing.
Obviously its the pinion seal thats leaking, the Pinion gear has a Collapsable Spacer (springy thing) to give preload to the pinion gear and diff housing, this controls the backlash between the pinion gear and crown wheel i believe. you can easily replace the seal without removing the pinion gear or opening the diff BUT DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE BIG NUT THAT LOCKS THE FLANGE ON AS YOU CAN CRUSH THE COLLAPSABLE SPACER, THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO OPEN THE DIFF TO REMOVE THE DIFF CENTRE/PINION GEAR TO REPLACE IT, you may need a puller to remove the flange but once off new seal can go in (you could use small self tapping screw to get out the seal if you have troubles-screw the screw into the rubber of the seal a little and pull).
You can however remove flange and put it back on without F*N the collapsable spacer, BUT i cant quite remember the exact procedure, (would pay to find out) but im certain you mark the nut and pinion before removal, then when re-tightening get it back to those marks the turn a further like 15 degrees or something anymore and you can wreck the collapsable spacer, dont quote me on the 15 degrees as it could be even less or more lol, usin locktight of coarse aswell...But i think you will find once the tail shaft is in even if nut came loose it cant fall off as tailshaft stops the nut from coming completly off.
IT MOST DEFINATLY IS NOT DONE UP "FT" LOL which is what i did the first time (we all learn-just the hard way for me).
Just my too bob, I learnt the hard way but fortunatly for me i had another low k diff in perf nic lyin round n ready to go, and i jus swapped em over, prob was more work lol BUT it did work hehe.... oh btw, this means, lift car, exhaust off, tailshaft out(or unbolt n slide into trans then support it somehow-get ya mate to burn his arms up holding it LOL so not to damage OR if you take it out you will need top up trans fluid, flange off, seal out, seal in, flange on, tailshaft in, exhaust on, (CHECK DIFF OIL AND TRANS LEVEL IF LOST SOME IN PROCESS AND TOP UP AS REQUIRED) then car down,, hope this helps you.
