my car has been making a weird noise for awhile now, after i turn, usually full lock or thereabouts, when i return the wheel to straight it makes like a clunk or knocking noise, only once though. Any ideas?
maybe something loose? have you changed anything to do with the front suspension lately?
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
Cv joints, although the usually go clank clank clank whilst turning...prob as walesy said, something loose in the front end, jack the car up from the middle and shake the tyres and see if something rattles
rear wheel drive dont have CV joints do they? and im thinking its something to do with the steering, somewhere between the steering wheel and the steering rack.
Mate of mine had a similar problem. Turns out where his steering rack and colum shaft bolt together were hitting his cooler pipes. Have a look and see if you can see scrape marks on your lines.
Possibly sway bar link pins or strut top bearings.
I would go with what Goose said, link pins or strut tops, I know for a fact if you've lowered your car and haven't put brand new strut top bearings in or even if the car has a few KM's on original strut tops or BOTH, the bearings in the strut tops wear out big time, and have a tenancy to Click and make a flicking sound when turning under load. Highly recommend changing them and your link pins first.
Check your steering rack ends and tie rod ends,i had a similar knock, turn out to be stripped threads, also link pins top metal bush seat, strut top mounts, usually the concave washer (if its stuffed or loose) moves with the strut. But,really, you should take it to suspension place, get them to diagnose the prob. quickly. Please let us know.
just drive really fast til something falls off...seriously WTF if something is loose and your not sure take it to a mechanic
Had similar clunck noise end up being bearing assembly on top of front strut
I have the same problem but only showed up after the mechanic replaced the steering arm (without notifying me) when I got a pink slip done....... that was in september, ofcourse the mechanic doesn't accept responsability but everything was fine until he touched it.... I won't be paying that invoice anytime soon...... 2nd dodgy mechanic i've been to in the past 12 months, a good honest mechanic is hard to find.
Had the same issue for the last 3 weeks in my vt 5.0 I noticed it when drove back from brissy to syd. Turns out my passenger side engine mount nut and bolt was loose. pulled out the whole airbox assembly and tighten it up today with a 18mm socket. No more clunks.
@ NateMcNate
Might be an idea to name the mechanic here so others in your area don't get caught?
