going to have a go at changing the link pin bushes this weekend however i don't have car stands or a trolly jack would car ramps work instead or do the wheels have to come off? any advice?
I think you should probably invest in a trolley jack and stands, they aren't that expensive and are pretty useful.
From memory, I think you have to take the wheels off and then swap out the link pins and bushes. It should be pretty simple. Just make sure you don't fully tighten them until the car has the wheels on and is back on the ground, so it's sitting as it normally would. Another tip, turn the wheel full lock away from the car to make the link pins easier to get at, and make sure the bushes all go on the right way.
Good news! Repco currently have link pins with bushes (Nulothane) on special for about $85. Also they have on special a jack and car stands for about $45 dollars! Go forth and prosper! Also if you need to know what to do! I wrote up a how to about it. In my signature!
Although I did spend the whole time being a tool x.X Good luck mate!
Repco has them on special in the latest catalogue $59 for trolley jack and stands and some other stuff Offer Detail
ok changed them on the weekend without too much drama now there is a slight knock sound on the left side of the car when turning right what does that mean?
Did you apply grease to the bushes when you installed them? And how tight did you do them up?
They aren't meant to be real tight. I think the recommended tightness is tighten until the bushes are touching then a like two turns more. I'll double check when I get home. There should be a bit of thread showing underneath I think.
i might add that they were tightened with the suspension jacked up just under road level
Hmm you're meant to do it with the car fully on the ground. But it could be an unrelated thing like your strut top bearings or just something that happens with the poly bushes too, as they can creak a bit.
the only other thing that was changed at the same time was the caster bushes
Yeah I dno man, if it worries you then maybe take it to a suspension joint (not Pedders lol) and get them to check it.
yeah im going to be getting a wheel alignment soon anyway
Sounds good. Just got home and checked the book:
"Swaybar endlink assembly, fitment and tensioning must be done with the vehicle at normal ride height to ensure correct alignment, clearance and operation.
Caution: Do not over-tighten swaybar pin type link bushes. Nuts should be tightened until washer meets the bush and stops rotating. then tighten a further 2/3 of a turn. Over tightening compresses and pre-loads the polyurethane bush which reduces articulation and may cause premiture failure.
Re-tension all fittings after a settling-in period, but not later than 100kms after installation."
- General fitting instructions for Whiteline swaybars
Hope that helps.
thanks for all your help!
