Keep your polish and wax products off any plastic and rubber, as these can stain.
When washing, use a CLEAN sponge that hasn't been dropped in the dirt. If your car's dusty or covered in road grime from wet roads, then take an old, clean sponge with the hose on it and gently remove the worst of the crap before doing the thorough wash. Work in a to-and-fro motion to reduce the risk of swirl marks.
