Default WHATS YOUR OPINION? LOOKS vs POWER!

Hi there, just having a debate with my partner about our car, so we want to know what you guys think!

as a car owner you want your car to look nice and drive well, whats your opinion on what you would do first. would you upgrade the look of your ride or would you upgrade performance? for example we just recently bought a l67 vt s im following the path of upgrading my motor before say big sound system or better body kit, custom paint, bigger wheels and so on. where would you rather spend your money? upgrading the performance on a fast ride with balls that can still look good and turn heads with out the flashy exterior or spend the money on the flashy exterior with an average motor and turn heads on how it sounds and looks. not everybody has the money to buy both at once so spending money wisely which path would you take? would love to hear peoples opinions cheers

I went sound system and a few cosmetic mods. Why? Cause I am a P plater and not allowed to have a fast modified car lol
If I was on p's then I'd go fast car that makes a wet spot in the drivers seat when the accelerator is smashed to the floor haha

Depends, you're gonna get more value from the looks department. You're gonna spend a small fortune on the engine for minimal rewards performance wise. Personally, if the engine is reliable and solid, I would work on neatening up the looks and all such first, and THEN tackling the engine, if at all.
    So my vote:
    Looks then engine.

That said on my car, engine rebuild is probs gonna come first but she's driven further than the distance from the Earth to the Moon.

    Regards,
    Mike.

I would normally say performance but with your car just go for looks and save yourself a world of disappointment.

On one hand I say definately go performance, because nothing is more laughable is cars that draw attention with their bark but have no bite.

One the other hand, visual stuff is were I think you will get the most enjoyment from because you get to enjoy that ALL the time, while performance you can only REALLY enjoy now and then.

depends on the car, i'd go for power first, if anything should go horribly wrong with the body of the car... i.e. garbage truck backing into it... you can pull your go fast bits out and transplant them into another car.....
kinda sad if you spend heaps of $$$ on the body only to have a moron back into you or cop a hail storm.

I like to suprise people with cars they dont expect to go any good due to looking relatively standard.

so you've got a VT S pak, i'd lower it on some clean 18's and then install a MACE chip, 1:9 rockers and a full exhaust. Now go and install your sound systems and work out how much more your willing to spend?

dont bother with the 10psi upgrade you'll prolby make 145rwkw with the above mods and save for the intercooler and then upgrade the boost at the same time.

see i think it looks alright as it is, was going to go a vh sle with253 or 5.0l but decided to go the supercharged 6 instead they go just as good as a 5.0l but with out the roar. its my first decent car and saved 3 months to get it. dont want it loud with exhausts and subs and that want it low key and under the radar where if i wanted i could easily blow a 5.0l its a family car so i dont want it off its head just want the bit of get up and go to it. everybodys telling me lower it and dump it on 20's but i think yeah maybe later down the track a set of black and chrome 19's and maybe and inch lower on the fe2 suspension. next week going the 10psi pulley and in 2 weeks the Y/T split ratio roller rockers and a full service. and then id be happy until my next car in a couple of years. the debate me and the mrs are having is that she thinks most people want looks so why bother with the motor, i think the other way around. a good detail and polish makes the world of difference and a normal set of rims look nice as apposed to they hype on 19's and 20's i think id rather a decent motor than a decent size wheel. thus why the question. so was asking more about your opinion on cars in general rather than my car. Up until my current ride I've always put comfort and looks first but once you've had the taste of some good power there's no going back! POWER!!!!!!!!!

well ive always been power hungry, ive always had shitty or stock looking cars with "surprises"... but with the caprice i went mostly looks over power first, dont get me wrong ive still done power mods, enough to sail this 2 tonne boat to a 13.1@108mph with a shameful 2.1 60 footer :P

but when i bought this car i wanted to have a nice looking car for once, ive got most of that sorted, and now ive got 10k put away and still saving to get to at least 20k before i start my LS3 + harrop HVT2300 conversion, then i will have BOTH! :-D
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!

I think a healthy ballance is in order.

As we are talking about commodores, the base models have enough power without modifications, that a few cosmetic enhancements can be done. I think it's important for a car to look nice, however less important for it to go like the beans. For instance, I want my car to look nice, however when it comes to power, whatever is there will be a secondary thought to trying to get my car more fuel efficient.

Power and handling first. Looks are a very distant 2nd, and sound system a long long way behind that

on my ute i started with looks, after a few little break downs on the mechanical side of things im now going for engine reliability rather then power and looks come next. once im off my p's then ill be goin down the power road.

id say the looks, unless your wanting to race it.. Because with all the crap laws that are around for driving fast, its a waste of money IMO... Cops cant fine ya for having a nice looking car!! (Unless its too low or something)...
But as others have said you get stuff all extra value on the car for having a jizzed up bodykit.. So really cosmetics isnt gonna get ya more money from your car if you were to sell it...

Honestly if i was me i would spend money on the looks by getting LEDs, HID's maybe a half decent radio that plays USB and bluetooth, nothing too major.. Then going for things that will make the car handle better like suspension upgraded sway bars ETC, as this not only makes the car better and more fun to drive it also makes it somewhat safer to some degree.. Then once all thats done id probably sell the car and start over lol.. But yeah i wouldn't waste my time on CAMS, turbo chargers, & the works.. If i wanted a car that went like a rocket i wouldn't bother buying a commodore thats designed for the average family to use as an everyday car.. Id be looking at a lambo or a porsche type thing..
