Heya,
My mate is buying an VXII SS on the weekend and i was wondering what is the top speed limiter on those, as i know the ecotech is ~196
Cheers,
Normie666
I have had mine up to 220km/h (thats the highest reading on a standard cluster) an was still accelerating.
Take it easy...But do take it...
Do not argue with an IDIOT.
He will just drag you down to his level an beat you with experience.
Some people take me the wrong way, Like smacking up Marijunna.
I had my 2L 4 pot Telstar up to 200![]()

What's that got to do with the speed limiter on a VX SS. I'm pretty sure theyre set at 254km on the LS1.
If your mate is still alive, can slow down quick enough or his car is still in one peice when he attempts to get to 254km/h. Ill eat my hat

I didn't think they were actually speed limited. The 255km/h is a speedo limit being FF in Hex
I dont think the ecotec is limited to 196, infact im pretty sure of it. My memorys are a bit vague, because I haven't been an arseclown with a death wish for many years
Country roads, no cops. Perfect place haha :P yeah i guess he will just have to test the SS and ill let you know :P
Sorry should have said, I don't think the LS1 engines were speed limited.
But have just found this Autospeed article
So it looks like there was a limiter at 255km/h. But I assume if the car was tuned it may be removed.

Top speed of a road car is completely irrelevant, as long as its drives nice and doesn't feel sluggish that's all that matters.
Even AMG Mercedes are speed limited so it would be fare to say the Commodore is. And you don't die doing 200 km/h or faster. Some of the roads are more than capable of handling that speed. In the old days we used to sit on 95-100 mph out in the country. And that was in a 1972 xa fal..n up the infamous Newell Hwy. Down the straight at Phillip Island flat out????. Plenty of places to go fast...
The limit is not related to speed per say.... it's a rev limit based on a few variables so depending on auto/manual, diff ratios, kw... so here are just some stock numbers after a 5 min google.com.
Holden 220kw, LS1, auto(4speed) & 3.08 diff @ 5500rpm = approx 245km/h
Holden 220kw, LS1, 6speed manual @ 0.63:1 & 3.46 diff @ 5500rpm = approx 250m/h
HSV 255kw, LS1, 6speed manual @ 0.56:1 & 3.73diff @6250rpm = approx 273km/h
HSV 297kw, LS2, 6speed manual @ 0.50:1 & 3.46(Should have been 3.73)diff @6550rpm = approx 297km/h(proven in the NT by Skaife)
Those numbers are wrong!
LS1, auto (4speed) & 3.07 diff @ 5,500rpm = 310km/h
Thats if no other governors, stall locked up and the car having the power to do it
Going by the spreadsheet I wrote. here, under Speed calc
A VX LS1, with stock diff 3.07
at 5,500rpm
Gear Gear ratio 3.07 3.45 3.73 3.91 4.11
1 3.06 71.0 63.2 58.4 55.7 53.0
2 1.63 133.3 118.6 109.7 104.6 99.6
3 1 217.2 193.3 178.8 170.6 162.3
4 0.7 310.3 276.2 255.4 243.7 231.8
at 6,000rpm
Gear Gear ratio 3.07 3.45 3.73 3.91 4.11
1 3.06 77.4 68.9 63.7 60.8 57.8
2 1.63 145.4 129.4 119.7 114.2 108.6
3 1 237.0 210.9 195.1 186.1 177.0
4 0.7 338.6 301.3 278.7 265.8 252.9
So for my 4.11 diff, reading from real world logs. (I backed of before the quarter mile in this run)
1st @ 6,000 = 57
2nd @ 6,000 = 108
3rd @ 5,500 = 162 I don't have any logs @ 6,000rpm on my pc to check.

im sorry you dont die going 200km/h??...yeah most of australian roads are capable of cars to go that fast or faster, but the driver mighten be capable, and theres to many variables, what if someone pulls out in front of you/your tire pops/your brakes stop working...pretty sure hitting a tree or another car going 200km/h and you have a 1 in 1000000 chance of living...
QldKev... I stand corrected and it's all good, especially seeing this was a 5min google I did
I take it that you have taken into account wind resistance and of course rolling resistance of the tyres in your calcs.![]()

Hate Speeding
Personally i like the feel of Launching from a stop start and feeling the Gs![]()
I will let you know what speed I get up to over the 1000m when I go to Temora in October.
Stock LS1 auto hold 5500rpm in top gear and do 310km/h? I don't think so. It would bounce itself off the road long before you hit that speed.
