96? From what I know, the VTs started sept. of 97. You need to be more descriptive, rear camber may be out, rims may be buckled, tire might be worn excessively. Would suggest taking to a tire/suspension specialist.

Could be brakes. Will be quiet even you brake, perhaps you can't hear it when your accelerating?

Jack the back up and turn the wheel and see if you can reproduce it.

I'd get some idea myself before I payed anyone.

Could be your diff. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it. When it warms up you might hear a slight winding noise when lightly holding the accelerator to maintain a certain speed on a straight. Won't make noises when accelerating or braking.....hang on...you just said you got new tyres...on nearly every car that i've driven, and every mate that got new tyres, almost always for quite a few thousand k's you can hear a low, constant, grinding noise. That's nothing at all. That's just your fresh new tyres gripping the ground. After a little while you'll develop camber wear and the noise will go away!

Is it a constant grinding or a "shing-shing-shing"?
If it's the latter, it'll be the handbrake shoes very slightly dragging. Yank on the handbrake a couple of times while moving slowly in reverse and it'll stop it for a bit.
