You're better off going comprehensive (in my opinion) for a number of reasons. In the event that something happens, you will be covered (unless you are drunk etc). Over time the premium will reduce. This is quite often based on the period of time that a comprehensive policy has been held, notmthe perod of time that younhave been driving.
It may be expensive - my first car cost $7500 and insurance was over $1000 for the first year. It is part of the running expenses of the vehicle.
Well I am a 20 year old P plate who has made no claims, never lost my license, no criminal record, no nothing. With VT V6 Auto and my insurance for 3rd party fire and theft is $500 p.a. The reason I don't go full comp is that it would cost more than $3500 per year. Given my car is worth $500, what they are saying is I am going write it off completely 7 times a year (to quote Clarkson).
But if you're buying a decent car, full comp might be the way to go.
Note I am in NSW, so my rego includes 3rd party protection against injury to other people. My insurance with NRMA covers the vehicle only - not sure what other states have.
I also recommend NRMA, they are usually pretty good imo.

progressive was the highest quote i got for full comp for the stato at nearly 2 grand, racv was $1050, youi said thay would beat racv and quoted $980, in the end I just stuck with my current policy with just car 3rd party fire and theft for $390 insured for $10k. had 10 months left so just transfered it to new car. Just car are ok I have been with them for years you can have mods but you have to tell them.
Pretty sure third party insurance covers damage to the other persons car, third party fire and theft is obvious, greenslip is the people involved and comp then covers damage to your car plus everything else just mentioned.
Keep in mind you definitely get what you pay for, always read the fine print.
I have NRMA third party fire and theft, Im in NSW and pay $500 for 12 months, never had any issues with NRMA
Yeah well i cant really afford 3k per year with full comp.... As long as the guy i hit is covered meh... You live you learn.
I've found Shannons best for my V8, worth a try

Can you insure under your parents names with you listed as a driver on the policy (or listed in their policy)? This may reduce the premium.
There was a crap thing on ACA the other night that i sort of heard about a bloke in a Corolla (I think) who hit a Maserati. He was deemed at fault and even with insurance and was still liable for some of the damage. The Maserati driver was drunk and therefore should not have been on the road - there are too many people out there with lawyers available.
There is now a company advertising as being the ones to see when you get yourself into trouble with a car (drink driving, speeding etc) as they can get you off (that is what the ads infer - reality may be different). Insurance at the end of the day is not a guarantee but it something that will hold you in good stead in the future.
Slightly different (but same) concept - I knew a bloke who had a new VL Group A. No insurance as the cheapest was $2,000 or there a bouts. 2 months later, he had an ignition barrel.
10 years later, the police rang him and asked him to come and identify his possession - all that remained was the block.
He had to pay off the car while it was not there - it was being stripped and divided up by scum.
With the relative value of your car I can understand that there is a financial consideration, but get quotes to co are what would be the case if you were 25 and never had insurance - does the policy decrease or are you just delaying the inevitable?
My father in-law never insured any vehicle. Too good a driver. Drives professionally. Blah blah.. Bought a F250 for $25,000 and weeks later had a slight head on issue with a car that he should have seen. The F250 is now in the backyard - 5 years later, partially fixed. Not a good investment.
Don't say it won't happen to me or I'm too good a driver or that you live and learn - find a way to get yourself covered.
Dad would never let me drive my car without insurance i went with just car 3rd party fire and theft for 518 happy with that.... Thanks for the advice guys... JUST WANNA START DRIVING!
3 Party fire and theft cover, with my insurance company, covers their car.
My CTP Green slip, which everyone in NSW must get as part of their rego, covers injury or death that might be occasioned by myself should I have a prang.
The difference between 3rd Party Insurance and Full Comp is only to my own vehicle.
Anyone who drives around without protection against damage to other cars or injury to people are fools.

the sooner you get full-comp the better as a lot of insurance companies will give you rating on for life but only once you have had full-comp for X amont of time once you have it your preimiums and excess drop like a stone but anything less wont count towards it at all. sure it more pricey when your young but worth it later. when your under 24 off your p's and upgrade to a v8, turbo, s/c car and have a rating one for life you won't need to get a loan just to afford the insurance. also AAMI will give you an automatic rating one till you crash they will also give you for a small amount more each year rating 1 protection so if you crash you dont loose it (1 per year) then after 3 years your set. i use AAMI and have for years now and i have a vy ss mith mods and my full-comp insurance is only about $550 a year now.
Shannons wouldn't touch me because i had one speeding ticketfor 6km/h over
I went with RACV.
also having insurance and having a company that wont try and weasel out are two different things
I pay $780 for my vx s,full comp with racq.
Isnt too bad really considering It's the first car I've insured in Australia,Dont have a driving record over here,Dont really have a bad record from back home either.
if ur on p's, nominate urself as the main driver with aami and nominate ur mum or dad as an additional driver and it makes it a whole lot cheaper.
I too am a P1 driver (18 years old), and am looking at at least a grand insurance per year for comprehensive insurance.
I bought my car for $4000 and its market value with most on-line quotes is around $5500+.
NRMA with only my name (as the car is rego'd in my name is $1080).
Bingle is about $950, google them they are aussie owned and heaps cheap.
I'm only going full comp as if I write it off I'll get a reasonable amount of money to buy another decent car.
