Hi all, yesterday I went into Holden and started proceedings on a VE series 2 SV6. New car is all goods, but the trade in price they offered me for my Series 1 VT Calais V6 seems quite low. I've yet to seal the deal, and was seeking advice as to how much I could expect from a dealership, being aware that they will offer as little as they possibly can.
My VT is a 98 model, with 234,000km on the clock, a Jensen DVD player in the dash, and is pretty well stock. Granted, there are a couple of presentation issues such as having 2 separate keys(1 for ignition, 1 for doors), and needing a new clock spring for driver's airbag, but nothing too serious. It is mechanically A1 as far as they're concerned (a small power steering leak, but they didn't go putting it on a hoist).
So, how much should I expect to get for her at a dealership?
P.S I feel there was far to much coincidence between the amount I said I had left to pay, and the amount they offered me. That being around $2500.
You told them how much was left on your loan? I wouldn't have done that. VT SS' don't really go for any more than $10k now, but I would think private you should be able to get atleast $5k.
Have a look on carsales at what others are going for, if you can flog it off quickly in a private sale it would be better than trading it in.
For a 13 year old car with 234,000 kms I don't see you getting much more then that form a dealer ship, they have to put a little bit on to resell

Wanted To Buy=>> Mace 12mm or 25mm Manifold spacers - VX SS Headlights - VY handbrake complete set up
For Sale=>> vt/vx Berlina/Calais chrome window surround PM me for more details
remember a car yard is a business, they are out to make a profit.
they will need to detail and roadworthy your car and possibly supply a warranty to new owner
and how much rego is left
don't expect much more
if you have the time and effort sell it privately
might be worth getting a quote for a roadworthy as many owners believe their cars are in better condition than they really are
Buying a brand new car is like masturbation. Sure it feels good when your "sealing the deal", but when is all over and you've had time to think. You realised you've just ####ed yourself.
Hmm, interesting read. By the sounds I shouldn't expect more than I've been offered. Interesting to note on that page though, as I mentioned on the VE forums, is that the combined fuel economy of the VT is 9.9L/100km, whereas the SIDI 3.6L engines are claiming 9.8L/100km. I know there is an extra 35kw of power, but its advancement doesn't seem as great as hyped. I suppose the better comparison is the Ecotec v6 to the Alloytec SIDI 3.0L. Still, it's only .8L better. Apparently though, the 2012 update is down to 8.9L.
Also, aaronevolution, as I was doing finance through St George at the dealership, I kind of needed to tell them.
problem with selling an old car with lots of kms and flaws privately is you will have 11ty billion people call you and offer you their puppy plus a can of coke and a half eaten crunchie bar. thats why dealerships know youll probably rage-quit and trade it in anyway.
problem is you are trading a Series 1 VT Calais... you can try to sell it but its probably just less hassle to trade it in so you don't have to deal with boostcruising idiots
I have a VT but lets be honest... its a car from 1997 and is how many generations old?
$2500 is just on the border line id say. I mean if you have the power to haggle a little then Id simply say I want a minamum $3000 if you cant do that I'll find someone that can. For instance in the yr 2002 I sold my vn ss 5lt man, they offered me $5000 pfff it was in mint condition with only 45,000 k's on it. After a few choice words I left, the next day they rang me, appoligised & the principal offered $9000 witch Im sure they were worth around $14000+. Anyway I sold it for $10000 privatly & went else where to buy me new car. Car dealers will never change.....after all there in it for the money....they dont really car about you!!
3.5k-5k depending on condition, 5k being immaculate thoughout and low k's.
Well i bought my 98 VT calais around 5 months ago for 3.8k with a road worthy (Was in great condition and done just under 190k's)
$2500 max imo
My nephew just got $4500 on trade in for a VX Berlina V6. with 240,000km+. Think the price was up cause it's tiga.

After reading most of your responses, it makes me feel much better about the offer. Although, about 6 months or so ago, another dealer had offered $3500. At that point, I thought that was a poor offer, but I'm now thinking otherwise Lol.
Another question for you all. How much would you pay on an executive driven 2010 Series 2 SV6 auto, with only 4500km? As you'd expect, it's in mint condition.
If you can't get dollars off ask for dealer fitted options to be thrown in to sweeten the deal. Although these appear to be selling very well they may say NO lol and sell it to the next customer for full price.

I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.

IMO if you can get 4k you've done extremely well. $3500 is an awesome price
