Howdy,
Rounded my sump plug on Saturday so went off to Repco to buy a new one. Wrestled the old one off, drained the oil, fitted the new sump plug and filted, filled it up and low and behold, she leaks. Thought I may have overfilled the oil, so removed the plug and let a half litre or so drain out and refitted the plug. Still leaks. Spoke to my neighbour who has a VS Commodore and he said his did the same thing. Apparently the parts manufacture changed from copper washers to stainless steel washers, that this was probably the problem, and that he'd had to take his to a mechanic to fix it.
Has anyone else had this experience, and how can I fix it? Repco has offered to give me a replacement washer, but if the washer is not the right type of material, should I even bother with it?
Cheers!
Never Had that issue on any 4 ecotecs i have replaced the washer on, just using the new stainless steel washers. are you making sure the surface of the sump is nice and clean, IE no metal causing the washer not to sit flush ?
silicon it in should fix it , then get rid off it, or go to gmh and get a new one
Alrighty, so I went back to Repco and talked to them about the problem. I asked them about nylon or copper
washers, but they said they didn't have any, and gave me a replacement one telling me it was aluminium and would 'squash' into the right place when I put it on.
So tonight I finally got the time to do it, and guess what?? I swapped over the washers, and it still doesn't seal. Going to call GMH tomorrow and see about getting a genuine one, or just take it to a mechanic in case the sump is cracked or something. What do you guys think?
could be cracked thru the thread, but it would be a freak, i know it sounds silly but may be the sump hole face isnt level causing to warp when done up, check with a small metal ruler,a smear off silicon on the washer then install might stop a weep,,
I had the same problem I had to re cut the thread and I used a over sized plug and washer.
vt series 1 echotec has a differnt sump plug then series 2. series 2 engine carried over into the vx series. you need to take your engine number with you and holden can give you the right 1.
I had the same trouble on my vx commodore...changed oil and because the sump plug nut was rounded I got a new one from repco..then I notice a leak from the sump plug....I drained the oil last weekend and put back the original washer ..it still leaked so I went to a holden dealer today and got a new one from them ..it stopped the leak..the only difference between the repco plug and holden plug is the repco plug at the rear where the washer backs onto it at right angles only to the thread ...where the holden plug has a slight bevil on it on close inspection ..I hope this helps you..chappo
Provided the corresponding washer face on the sump isn't damaged, it should seal with a new, soft, copper or aluminium washer. I machined a groove on the plug face next to the thread and fitted an 'O' ring, just as some of the Jap cars have. Now it only has to be nipped up for a dry seal.
