Default Heavy steering - 99 VT Calais

    Hi...
I have a 99 VT Calais. A couple of times lately, my steering has become quite heavy. It seems to fix itself pretty quick (a few minutes) when I get going but obviously there is a problem there somewhere. I have a slight leak in the steering pump but fluid levels are fine. Is it likely to be the pump, and does anyone know how much I should be paying for this to be fixed?

    Cheers.

I had that happen a few times a few years ago, it would fix itself after restarting the car. The problem went away for good on it's own.

The Calais has speed sensitive steering, so that unit might have a fault. I don't know much about it (whether it's a mechanical or electrical unit, how it works, etc.) but that might be the cause.

Basically, it makes steering at certain speeds lighter/heavier to help keep the car straight and make slow speed manouvering easier.

about 300$ for a new pump and fitted mate.

it sounds like the pump. if it works when you get going.

Possible your pumps on the way out.
Good way to check is too put in N and rev to around 1500 no more is needed, then whilst holding the revs turn the wheel - if it's lighter I'd bet it's the pump is forked. Can also be accompanied by a whine.

The speed sensitive steering in the Calais has a solenoid in the rack, controlled by the BCM. If the fault is off or on, and when it's working it works fine, my money's on the solenoid. I've heard stories of heat from the exhaust damaging the wiring, so I'd start by checking the wiring to the solenoid.

I didn't realise the solenoid was serviceable, lufkin. IIRC, the manual says it isn't, go get the rack reco'd,
