aircon in 98 VT wagon

my air con is stuck on the the window de fog setting, usually when i change settings i can hear that its changing but now... nothing. Its very helpful if the windows fog up but if its hot as hell in the car its useless.
Anyone had this problem or have any idea how to fix it without taking it into a aircon shop..?
