Angry overtightened wheel nuts by using rattle guns

    ok guys and girls
Whenever you go to get anything done at a tire shop please check your wheel nuts cause it maybe overtightened (well most of the time they are overtightened). So it's a good practice to check your wheel nuts every time you go to the tire shop it will save you time and money.
A few weeks ago i went and got a wheel alignment and yesterday 4 of 5 of my wheel studs broke on the front right wheel.
All 5 of the wheel studs are brand new, I know cause I got them from repco myself 5/6 months ago.

More of a prick when the rock apes tighten them so much that u need a 1m long pipe over wheel brace to loosen them!!!! Kinda hard when u have a flat in the middle of know place!

They often over-inflate them as well.

it's not actually overtightening that causes it

it's when the thread has dirt/rust on it or when the tyre fitter cross threads the nuts

i use grease on wheel studs to prevent cross threading

overthightend nuts can also strech studs

just re read your post it sounds like the studs may have been streched

but any grease will do and just wind the nuts on by hand for first few threads that will stop cross threading

I have a rattle gun which I use on mine and my mates cars and never have any of them complained about something a long these lines.
Although my dad had the tyres changed on the wagon not to long ago and yesterday I went to change the brakes and (being at my dads house not having the rattle gun) had to use a 1m pole to get one of the front nuts off! quite annoying !

My mechanic always does the wheel nuts up with a torque wrench so I never have any issues with over tightened wheel nuts.
Re the using lubricant on the wheel studs, I used to use a smear of grease but have since changed my mind, after reading up a lot on the subject it appears it is better to just make sure the studs and nuts are clean and dry and torque the wheels up to the correct tension.
I was reading the drivers handbook on my sons 2009 VW Golf the other day and there is a big bold entry in the changing wheels area saying under no circumstances use any lubricant on the wheel studs, as the torque value will be incorrect and the nuts may come loose. Do a Google on wheel nuts and have a read.

There is also a problem with over torquing the wheel nuts can cause the disc rotor hat to distort causing braking issues.
I think there was some tech write up on the DBA website about this.

It's just not over torquing, it's incorrect and uneven torquing that can cause run out in the rotors. VT-VZ's are the main models affected by this.

this is correct even if the nuts are over torqued if they are all torqued even the rotor wont distort

as for lubricant on threads vw use bolts into the hub not studs
