Tranny oil leak

My 2000 car has a tranny leak on the 4 speed auto model 4l60e. It was shifting hard from 1-2 gears. I was worried the tranny was bad. But by closer inspection I checked the atf level and it was on the lower circle below the cross hatch. So I put 1/4 bottle atf into it till the top circle and to my surprise now the tranny is shifting really smoothly. I have had the car for two months and the engine oil and coolant level has not changed but the tranny level changed. I looked under the car and there are small droplets of atf on the bottom of the tranny pan and on the ground. My question is where do these 4 speed auto usually leak from. Is it a cheap fix like changing the oil pan gasket or do I have to remove the whole tranny.

Unless you know that the transmission has been regularly serviced, it sounds like you would be wise to service your transmission (or take it to a reputable transmission place) and replace the filter, seal, fluid and pan gasket. Alternatively, you could try and tighten up the pan bolts a little to see if that fixes the problem. However, the pan gaskets get hard over time and if your transmission hasn't been regularly serviced, tightening the bolts up could make the leak worse.

Yea I fill the tranny oil up to the top hole and next day the dipstick shows bottom hole, so I have a big leak. The oil never gets lower than the bottom hole it just stays there. And I have to add 1/4 bottle oil every time. I can tell the oil is low when I shift gears. Why does the tranny oil not go below the bottom hole and leak all out.

I had to replace the bushing at the rear of the transmission where it joins the driveshaft, no more leaks!!
