    Default Steering Wheel Controls

I saw a post on this forum a few weeks back of a new steering wheel control adapter for generic head units that does not use infra-red but is wired in to the head unit.

I have done a search but could not find the thread.

From memory, someone found the adapter but had not yet tried it. I think it cost around $50 - $60.

Anyone know what I am talking about?

    Cheers.

It is my understanding that you need to get a Head Unit that supports input from remotes, E.G Some Alpines have this. The input is usually in the form of a 3.5mm plug. Alpine sell their units with the ability for this but you need to buy an Alpine steering wheel controls adaptor (SWC-C10)

For a lot of other units, if they say they are 'ready' for steering wheel control remotes, they need a 3rd party branded interface for the controls on the VT/VX to be able to plug in.
Such interfaces are like this one 'The CAT' THE CAT
The cat also works with steering wheel control 'ready' alpines.
I'm also fairly sure some kenwoods work with these adaptors.

Alpine headunit hard wired remotes use a digital signal. if you've got a pioneer like me, you can just pull apart your buttons, and replace the resistors with pioneer rated ones and will all match up

Mine is a cheap Chinese double din head unit that has DVD/CD/GPS/Radio etc. It comes with three wires (+, - and negative) for the steering wheel controls. You can then program the HU to recognise various signals coming from the ssteering wheel controls and assign them to a function on the HU.

So, like a smart-arse I just connected the Neg to the earth, and the +ve to the brown wire from my wheel. The result was the voolume went straight to the top and could not be lowered (really annoyed the neighbours!!).

So, obviously I need some kind of adapter. Just not sure what type. I do not want the infa-red remote adapter.

    Cheers.

Thinking of getting the same - Not a WTHYOU is it? - I was hoping The Cat would solve a problem like this. Apart from the steering control problem does the rest work OK?

there are threads in the car audio section on steering wheel control interfaces.
i've got one from these guys, iPod Integration for your car and More by Pac-Audio - Connecting you to the future

can't remember the price, but pretty sure was over $100 nzd
they had different versions to suit different HU's and are pretty easy to install.
mine was the IR model, mounted the IR sender in the steering column below the wiper control. wire it up to power, earth and the appropriated steering wheel wire behind the HU, and programe it to suit.

    No, mine is a no-name.

But it does have a "learning steering wheel control" feature. And I read on another post that the controls go through the BCM. If I bypass that, it may work. Otherwise I will just dump the controls.

either a SWI-PS or a SWI-X (ones for infra-red the other is for 3.5mm hardwired remotes).

Also an Aussie mob called Stinger have a Cat10 device that should work fairly sweet.
