Default 1 Din Under the 2 Din Mod - Possible?

    Hi all,

Has anyone installed a 1 din under the 2 din where that small compartment is?

does anyone know if it would fit?

or were would be the best place to install a 1 din if your 2 din space is already used?

Remove the compartment, cut into the plastic, build a bracket, get some wiring - maybe.

Are you putting in a CB Radio in or something?

Probably for a screen in the normal position and then the stereo underneath is my guess. I contemplated this set up but with a slightly different twist, I'm thinking the head unit in the console and a second face mounted behind the pocket door so you can hide it when you want.

Right. Even though you can buy double din dvd players with a screen all built into one unit.

I know what u mean!.. i was in the same boat, all dvd with screen unit's i have seen are great in every way other than if u want good loud sound!
I had 2 single din units in my old VP for that reason, i had a single din dvd but really wanted to keep my pioneer unit for the sound because the dvd unit had pretty basic tuning and sound so i made them fit! turned out nice in the end, I had to cut quiet a few things out but it worked in the end.
I think if you dont mind cutting things up a bit then i'd say u could probably get it in there, just not sure if the depth is there.
If it doesent work for you, you can get a Line driver, they go inline with the RCA's and boost the signal of the crappy dvd player audio signal, and also have a bit of tuneability to them to, the more u spend the better you will get, But it probably still won't match up to a good pioneer deck but it would be better than nothing.
    Good luck!

yeah bro, these 2 din's are crap, if you don't want to spend $2000 for all the features you want. I will have a good look when i install my new heater core which i have planning to do for over a month now. And if i can get the replacement parts i'm going to hack before i start i will do it, I really really hope it can be done

Wow vx_commodore you have no idea about car audio. OP why do you want such tuneability. Your not keen on just installing an amp?

Err dont know where you got your info from, but if the source audio signal is shyte it wont matter what amp you use.

Going by your logic I can get a audiophile amp and hook it up to my factory HU & speakers and have them sound like Focal Utopias
As mentioned by the OP..SQ audio is about signal quality and tunability not how many watts you throw at it.

Anyway..apart from how good you can cut the surround to fit the 1 din, I would be more concerned with proper support for the equipment.

Whats your budget for the 1 din or do you already have it?
Must admit Im a Alpine fan and have been looking at iDA-X305S with PXA-H100

Apparently the x305 will play WAVs via usb as well as having slightly smaller dimensions then their top of the line cd player and weighs over half a kilo less.

I have seen YouTube vids of the H100 being auto tuned via laptop but haven't seen anything with programming the EQ.(which maybe completely automated via the autotune)

Not sure how the X305 would sound without the H100 either.

Sorry for this really late reply I somehow missed the last 2 replies to this thread. And they are good replies.

DrJeckyl: what do you mean: " I would be more concerned with proper support for the equipment."?

also about the iDA-X3055 with the PXA-H100, I'm a BIT of an alpine fan but the old alpine,

IMO there new stuff either sux or ins't worth it. If your looking to spend that amount of money I would look into Pioneer Premier or Clarion (forgot the model name but there is a deck out there that kicks the crap out of just about everything). Alpine has lost it's way and many people that I know are steering clear of there crap.

also btw i wouldn't call myself an expert by far.

I got an older Alpine deck that I'm going to be installing. One thing I would love however on these older decks is Usb Support (generic usb support, i couldn't care less for icrap) + maybe I haven't really hear it myself tbh good quality Burr Brown 24-Bit DAC.

I think your money could be better spent on another deck then that digital only receiver + imprint

It's pretty sad when someone thinks of doing some kind of mod which is different and unique to what every one else does and he gets so called experts knock him for it. So what if it doesn't work at least he's trying something different to what every Tom Dick and Harry does, but what will be funny is if this works out and looks quite good in the end I have no doubt everyone will jump on the band wagon and say how cool it looks. Go for it and keep us updated on progress.

JMP thanks mate, I'll keep the good people that are interested updated

wraith - why don't you try doing just a little bit of research into it before you come on here and hate. There are plenty of websites/quality stores that will tell you the same thing, but I really couldn't care less what you think go play with your itunes.

It's funny how you get people that have no idea about a subject just bash it because they have nothing better to do. I really try not to give any notice to people like that.

When it goes to an amp though isnt the sound from the headunit taken from the preouts? So the sound hasnt been distorted by the headunit or? Cause this is wait I thought. Also I got a decent double din headunit that has plenty of features for under $800 and it goes fine so I don't know why you would go through all that trouble to have a no name screen in ya car when you could just get a decent headunit to start with.

Ps also isn't wraith a car audio installer for a living?..

Double dins are great for a quick and easy installation which I myself have done heaps of times and these days the quality of these units has improved heaps but as I referred to previously it's nice to see people doing something different to everybody else.
I myself have looked into installing a 7" TFT touch screen hooked up to a 12 volt mini ITX computer, that can run all your media needs, music, video, TV, radio, GPS, if you want (I personally would prefer a decent head unit to do that part myself) but with the added bonus of Internet and even integrating it into engine management so it can display real time engine data etc etc, so much more than a double din unit can. Yeah it may not be everybody's cup of tea but who cares.

I did car audio for over a year :P It had it's place in the 80's and early 90's when you didn't have the options you do have now. Head unit design, amplifier design have all progressed in leaps and bounds since then. FYI hooking up a computer to a screen was all the rage around 10 odd years ago so your not breaking new ground there or being different.....
