hey guys on monday night i went to the national park for a drive and one the way home my car started whining from the back... at first i though it was a wheel bearing, but have now learnt that it was my diff, as on friday night, only 5 days later, went to the park again, didnt even thrash my car and now the car is un driveable... it came to a loud crunching halt on the side of the freeway and now it wont even roll in neutral...ive taken the tailshaft off and found that the spline that comes out of the diff is in good wear, but the yoke on the tailshaft that the spline goes into is a bit shredded... the car wouldnt roll forwards but would roll backwards, and is the same story even with the tailshaft disconnected... im assuming that if the car wont roll forwards in neutral, while the tailshaft is disconnected, that the diff would be gone also...
where would be the best place to go for new diff parts????
is it worth buying a whole new diff already assembled, and just throw it in??? or would i be better off buy new diff gears and doing the work myself...
ive heard it needs to be synchronised to ensure its quiet and last long as possible....
any help much appreciated, cheers
stuey
I'm no expert, but if you're car won't roll forward with the tailshaft dissconnected it's a bit of a worry and it might be more than just the diff. You might want to get it checked before you start buying parts. If you're diff is gone though, I would highly recommend diffs2u. They are on eBay and they sell full reco LSD's with oil for $900. That's were I got my 3.7 and it goes good.
i wouldn't spend the cash fixing yours(CROWN and pinon gear probably) i put a low k vz diff under my vt which i got of eBay fairly cheap,if you put anything newer than a vt diff remember you need to change the tail shaft.
"next time try stay fairly local when you decide to go cut doughnuts lol"

*Crown & Pinion is what your after there uwishn.
As for stueys question, sounds like you have done a good job on it. First thing I would do is see what is in the oil.
Apart from that, your up for a diff rebuild / new diff. You can get rebuild kits from just about anywhere. I think Holmart have genuine gears for ~$750 but then you need bearings, gaskets etc and someone to put it together. You have to set the preload on the gearing to ensure it is set correctly otherwise if slapped together you will be up for another diff in the not to distant future.
I bought my 3.9 LSD complete diff from Queensland Diffs. Worked out to $1300 delivered to me in Darwin after core deposit refund. I have had my diff for the last 2 years and still as strong as the day I bought it. You can have a look on eBay but its buyer beware. To be honest, I would look at a reputable diff builder and go from there however if your a bit strapped for cash, go with what the others have said.
New or rebuilt diffs can be made to fit the VT without modifying the tailshaft
