    Default handbrake cable r wiring??

    hey,

99 vt wagon.. i live on a dirt road and last week coming up the hill my handbrake light flickered a bit, since then its doing it on speed bumps, roundabouts and bumps in road..it doesn't feel as thpugh handbrake is sticking and it holds fine parked on steep hills etc

its intermittend and if i wiggle handbrake side to side while driving it goes off, but i noticed there's about 1cm play in the side to side movement of lever. is this normal i've never noticed this in any other car i've owned.. i also noticed the release button is jamming in now and then an only does release with a slight whack.

the pads were replaced front and back in june for rego. the lights starting t annoy me but brake system is fine as far as master cylinder, booster, fluid level an pad wear.
EDIT: i also had the fuel gauge drop to empty and comp said 17kms in tank although there was 3/4 tank i switched off car an restarted same thing.. turned it off kicked it over 3 hrs later an it had 610kms again on comp reading?? related maybe ecu dieing??

any idea's how to stop this light flashing would be greatly appreciated as im doing a 1800km drive from gold coast to sydney and back with my son's next week and i dont think drowning out the chime with stereo will cut it
    thanks

All you can really do is pull the handbrake cover off and check the switch, maybe make adjustments so it is not so sensitive. I haven't had a look at the switch setup so if it isn't adjustable a new switch is probably needed. Also check if the the bolts securing the handbrake lever are tight, they could be loose and this is the reason for the excessive movement.

luckily a pair of tweezers fixed it i lifted the sleeve of actual handbrake and found a $2 coin wedged in behind it which was obviously stopping the handbrake releasing completely problem solved an $2 richer .

Those coins can be a nuisance. I had one stuck under my fuel cap release lever and I couldn't open the flap.
