    Default coolant leaking still?

had a leaking water pump 2 weeks ago so i drained the coolant a replaced the pump and the seal filled the car with coolant drove it for 20 min, topped up the coolant then drove for another 30min with the level not changing. Just checked the level today and the coolant reservoir was very low is this normal after replacing the pump and changing the coolant or do i have a leak still?

Did you use sealant and do the bolts up to spec and also allowing the silicone to cure?

Do you have a intake manifold leak by chance, the drivers side is usually first to go.

I did use sealant and gave it an hour and a bit to set I didn't use a torque wrench though. I paid my mechanic top dollar to replace the inlet manifold seal about 2 months ago so i doubt that's leaking I will probably get it pressure tested tomorrow

When the engine is cold it should only just register on the coolant dip stick. But air locks can be a bit of a pain to clear.I always run my engine till warm, turn the heater on full and then carefully remove the radiator cap whilst the engine is still running and slowly top up with coolant.Good luck.

pressure tested it at 18 psi today with no leaks so yeah must of been an air lock, I was told by the mechanic to leave the radiator cap off over night to get all the air out

Dont know if the 5L is the same ( probably not ) but with my ls1 i just run the car for a couple of mins with the cap off. as the coolant bottle is the highest point.

Remember to have the heater on to ensure there is no air in your heater hoses.

The Holden V8 automatically purges any air out of the cooling system in a couple of days after replacing the water pump/coolant. When you replace the water pump/coolant you need to have the heater set to high, turn the engine on with the radiator cap off and top up the coolant in the radiator until the bubbles stop and the radiator begins to overflow. Then replace the radiator cap and top up the coolant in the overflow to the high mark. Over the next couple of days you will have to top up the overflow tank as the air is automatically bled out of the system. Don't take any notice of advice from V6 people as the V8 cooling system design and its requirements are different to the V6.

If you are still having problems with coolant usage, make sure that the heater hose clamps on the water pump are done up really tight as this is a common place for leaks after replacing the water pump.
