    Default Cam Sensor?????????????

    hi

    question,
Vt 1999 3.8lt (auto) car stalling when hot , changed CAS three weeks ago, only to find yesterday driving more than I would normally would the motor stalled
mid driving , pulled over, cooled the front of the motor with water (water pump area) waited 3 to 4 mins and started drove 2 km and stalled again, once again water over the front of the motor and started drove home.

when the CAS was replace a code for CAM Sensor appeared not CAS sensor, could it be a CAM Sensor problem???????????

    thank you

Still sounds like a crank angle sensor problem with those symptoms. Was it replaced with a new item or second hand? Genuine or aftermarket? Personally I would only use a genuine GM CAS. Many aftermarket copies have been known to cause more trouble than they're worth and have a shorter lifespan.
A fauly cam angle sensor should not cause the symptoms you have. Can't hurt to rule it out though if you're getting such fault codes and if you know someone close by with an ecotec you can swap it from to try it. Held in by one 10mm bolt and an o ring seal.

I had a problem with my ecotec when I first got it. The little plastic cage thingy that holds the camshaft angle sensor trigger magnet in the camshaft sprocket hole, had gone brittle and had cracked, which lets the camshaft sprocket magnet move forward in its hole in the camshaft sprocket, and then it hits the camshaft pickup sensor, which smashes the pickup magnet to pieces. I could see where it had hit on the camshaft sensor pickup, it left a big gouge in it. With no working camshaft sensor, I was getting code 48 showing up, and the car wouldnt idle properly, it would idle really roughly, and it used to stall a lot too when idling. When I pulled the timing cover, I found the pieces of broken magnet stuck to the engine block, (luckily). I just fitted a new magnet into the camshaft sprocket, ($80 for a magnet from a holden dealer), and its been all good and running perfectly ever since. I later read about this same problem cropping up in some of these engines that are used over in in the USA, and it was recommended that the cam magnet be glued into place in the camshaft sprocket so it cant move. I wish Id read this before I repaired mine.I would have glued it in too so it can never move again and hit the pickup.
