I just got into my car before to find the button on my gearstick to have raised up.. It wasn't like that when I got out of my car last night, so for some reason it's just popped completely out of the blue. You can see in the photo what I'm talking about.
Any ideas what would have caused this, or better yet, how to fix it? It still operates properly, I can push it down and change gears etc, however the button won't stay down, it'll always return to that raised position..
Hopefully someone can help me out as it looks ugly as ****...

Did you put Viagra in your fuel?
Clearly not a constructive comment...
There's a pin down lower under the cover with the gear indicators that holds it down so either it's fallen out which I think would be unlikely or the actual button has broken.
It's been a long time since I pulled one apart but I think there is a little pin that holds in place, the pin might have come out or the thing has broken. You will have to pull the whole thing apart and check it out.
Edit: Looks like I'm a bit late, stopped in the middle of writing to check my manual.
MY RIDE
I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
Ok thanks guys.. I'll hopefully have a look at it today, otherwise I'm going to have to put up with it until I get a free day..
Is it common for it to just break? Like I said, it wasn't while I was driving or anything, it happen whilst my car was sitting in the car port overnight.. weird.

Cheers mate that's going to help heaps!
Mine did this also, just broke.
Did you fix yours? Where did you get a replacement pin from?
Common feature with commodores. By putting constant pressure on the shifter the pathetic, weak plastic gives way. Essentially, should last forever if you are gentle and keep two hands on the wheel. If you drive like most of us, three - five years is the length of time they survive.
Will defs be a broken button not the pin. It's a roll pin and crazy sturdy sort of pin grab a button from Holden $20 and then follow the guide a few posts up
Simple simon
This happened to me about 3 weeks ago.
My honest opinion - dont go to a wreckers to buy one. I bought one and without realising it already had hairline cracks in the plastic when the pin goes through. When installing the new one from the wreckers, the same part snapped. Pretty big design flaw if you ask me. Just from my experience mate, be very carefull if you are planning on installing yourself. This one little piece caused me alot of frustration!
Looks like I better stop clicking mine up and down when at the lights waiting, bad habbit I know.
So it's tricky to get in.. Did you buy a new part from Holden? How much did that set you back? Someone mentioned $20 above, but just wanna make sure of this price. I am going to try and do it myself, so do you have any tips? lol
I don't even press my button that often, only when I change gear, and that's from P to R to D back to P.. I don't move through 3 to 1 or anything, and don't press the button outside of changing which direction I want the car to go :S.
I found it really hard to reach, i taped one end of the pin to a screw driver which made it heaps easier to get in. Expect to get angry as well, it's really fiddly.
I would definitely buy the new part from Holden, I think i spent $30 on the chrome one and the stock one was $20 or there abouts. this was a couple years ago now.
haha wait, I'm looking at the wrong guys post.. my bad lol. I didn't realize you came in halfway there.. haha sorry
Sorry for the late reply bud. Initially I bought the part from the wreckers, and paid $50 for the whole shifter assembly – snapped the actual part I needed trying to install it and that’s when i went to Holden. I installed it myself just using this guide, it has all you need to know: How to install a chrome shifter button in your VT/VX
Just be ultra careful and don’t force anything because it is a very fragile part. Another set of hands to help you insert the metal pin back through the plastic hole in the shifter would definitely help you out!
Let me know if you need more help mate.
