    Default Warped Disks??

My car has started shuddering very badly when applying the brakes.

It started jsut after I changed the rear brake pads (one was down to metal, but I did not get it machined.)

The shuddering has gotten worce over the past week, and is now accompanied with a sort of whoo whoo sound when I apply the brakes hard.

So I figure I have warped disks. I5t is probably easier and not much more expensive to just buy new disks than get these machined.

    But...

How to tell which disks are warped? I don't want to buy new front disks just to find out that it is the back nes that are warped (or vice versa).

    Suggestions?

    Cheers,

    JG

Just change the lot, even if only one is warped, the rest wont be in the best condition.

    Yeah +1 to that.

Just change them out and get some new ones, it's sounding like it's time. Really, brakes aren't something you want to cheap out on...

It's easy to do.. If it's front, jack up one side at a time and spin the wheel.. you will hear if it's rubbing on the pads.. Changing them is easy. Undo the caliper with a socket wrench (2 big bolts from the back) swing the caliper over and rest it on top or tie it down.. then you might need a heavy hammer or sledge wrapped in a rag to tap the old disc off.. Depends how must corrosion or whatever is behind it. Put on some new ones, compress the brakes and put them back on and job done. RDA or DBA slotties are ok as a replacement for the stock.

    Thanks for the replies.

I removed the disks on the rear when I changed the pads (to adjust the hand brake), so i am familiar with the procedure. The rear disks looked allright (only the slight scoring on one from where the slider had run out of grease).

The car, although a 2002 model, has only done 175 K kms, and all the disks looked to be in good condition. This was the first time in the 70K kms that I have let the pad get that worn (I did not have a chance to change the pads earlier).

Anybody know the part numbers for the disks? And where to get a reasonably priced set?

    Cheers,

    JG

heaps on ebay just have a look, here is what i would get:HOLDEN VT VX VY VZ Full Set Disc Rotors Slotted V6 & V8 | eBay
Also put news pads all round, dont reuse your old pads, this will just warp your new rotors

You may as well just replace everything. The discs are probably undersize now anyway.

Fronts discs you will feel through the steering wheel, rear disks you wont.

If they havent been skimmed before its a much cheaper option.

Just what i was told, the pads conform to the shape of the rotor, so if you use old pads that have groves/divits in them they will then put these groves into the new rotor because the surface of the pad isnt contacting the whole rotor. so you get scoring an can also warp the rotor.

Heat warps rotors nothing else. Unless the pads have high metal content they will wear to the face of the disc, not vice versa.

For optimal braking performance the pads should be changed when skimming rotors or fitting new ones but its not absolutely necessary.
