Post My Brakes are squealing pretty bad

Hey all, my brakes are squealing alot, when i first get in my car they wont make a noise for a couple of minutes but then after that they start to squeal loudly, it does it when i put the brake on steady but not when i brake a bit harder, i have had the car for a month now and was told they were new brake pads and could take some time for the surface glazing to go and it was also sitting in the yard for a while as well i think, but yea it has been a month and every chance i get i have been doing what i have seen suggested (going up to about 60 k's then braking hard to about 15 k's) but still after a month there is no improvement, what can i do to eliminate this very annoying squeal please!!?

It's common with the stock brake set up of the VT's, they get a bad squealing, the discs also warp and what not very easily.

Not much you can do unless you change the brakes to aftermarket ones.

What part do i change? the discs? was told the pads were new as well could they be shitty ones and causing this too? apart from the squealing the brakes are responsive and work good

Yeah, the squealing is usually indicative of worn pads. If the pads are new, it's a fair bet the previous owner just put stock ones on again - these squeal bad.

It's nothing to worry about, mine to squeal, however are very responsive. It was only a few weeks before mine started squealing. If you are set on getting rid of this, you will need to buy a new set of pads and discs, and probably rims too if you get some nice big vented discs or something.

Really, unless it's super annoying to you, just leave it. Sounds like you'll know when they have actually gone off, you can replace them then.

jack your car up and check your pads and dont believe what the previous owner told you check them yourself....there can be a few reasons your brakes squeal from missing anti rattle clips worn rotors lose fitting brake calipers etc cheap brake pads....check your brake rotors to see if there are any grooves or gouges in them...if so they might need machining to make them true again but sometimes they might be to far down to machine... make sure your brake pads have plenty of meat in them....if there looking worse for wear...then replace them....Bendix premium are a good brand i use them no squeals....if you have never changed your brake pads before there fairly easy to do but if your not confident your best to take it to a brake specialist.

There's nothing wrong with Holden, they just squeal a bit is all.

And agree with others, don't simply rely on the last owners words, best get the double checked anyway.

Ok thanks, yea i have heard bendix pads are good so ill try them out when i get the chance, i still want to replace all the oils, fluids, filters etc too as i dont know how well the last owner(s) treated it with replacing them sort of things, i spose holden would charge a shitload for doing all that? i need to get my own mechanic lol

Do you have any kind of service history on it? If not I'd be taking it to your normal mechanic if you have one, and giving it a thorough going over.

Yea it has a service history, up until 112000 k's it had a service every 10,000 and then there was none up until 166000 which the dealer got done before i bought it but i dont trust it was a thorough service as it was the same guys who done the roadworthy on it and they passed the roadworthy with the handbrake not working and the front indicator not working, they are both fixed now but yea, the car is now on 1670000

I'd be getting a real good service done, by someone you trust. 167,000km is running in compared to my car lol. It's probably all fine, but just get it all checked out, hows the oil/coolant and all such look like? 40,000 is a long time if it's been neglected.

not sure how the oil is but im going to replace all that and probably put in the 10w/40 castrol magnatec i seen on here alot of people recommend that oil? the coolant was very dirty and not green anymore when i bought it so i flushed that out myself and put in some new stuff im not sure that i got all 12 liters though because i only fit in another 8-9 liters and it was full after i flushed it so ill probably get that redone by someone who knows it better than me

All depends on your driving style really as to what oil, my mechanic runs 20w50 in mine, and my cars still going so I'm not going to complain lol. If your coolant was like that it was well due for a change, as long as the oil is there and not too bad your car should be ok.

hey just want to double check, is it just the pads from holden what cause squealing or is it the discs as well?

My rears are squealing pretty bad too even though they've only worn down to just under half. I've got new bendix pads to go in and i'm gonna try getting the disks machined so hopefully that fixes it.

Does anyone know how to tell if disks can be machined? Is there a minimum thickness or something that they need to be at?
