    Default vt s/c 6 rattle

    Hey guys.

driving home tonight started hearing a fairly noticeable rattle coming from the motor just as i pulled into home. cant work out where its coming from, sounds like the drivers side of the motor. Rattle seems to disappear when engine revs increase, but is really loud on idle. Weird thing is, on the same drive, i noticed some weird clunks and squeaks from my (brand new) diff when it changes into second. cant see how they could possibly be related and probably just due to the fact my car is cursed from ass to tip.

Before i take it somewhere and get reamed (again) anyone have any suggestions abou what the hell could be going on and some quick diy diagnostic techniques to work out if theyre right?? would love to work this out tonight/tomorrow morn.

    cheers guys.

    pete.

Whenever I look for the cause f n issue it usually relates or is a result of recently completed work on the car. If your diff has recently been done there is a chance the cat back exhaust was dropped to do the job even though it's unlikely. If the tail shaft was worked on the exhaust would have been dropped so there could be a cause for your noise stemming from an incorrectly located exhaust rubber mount/ hanger. If the trans has been worked on recently the starter motor heat shield may have been damaged and could be vibrating against the starter.

I guess just have a look see in the engine bay and see if things move that shouldn't. With repetitive noises you ca usually find witness marks if somethings ben rubbing so that's another thing to suss out possibly

One of the idler pulleys could have sit themselves, that would cause a rattle.

With the diff, I agree that the exhaust may be rattling somewhere.

Thanks for all it help guys. Yeah that video sounds pretty much identical just not as loud. It's definitely something pulley related. Doesn't seem to have effected performance too much I don't think. Found a mutual friend working at a local Holden dealer so dropped it off this morning and should have an answer soon. Let yas know what happens.

    Thanks again boys

Turned out to be the harmonic balancer. They offered to source me a genuine Holden part for 950 incl labor!!! Bursons had one for $180. That plus 2 hour labor. Not too bad an outcome. Given that I droe about 20ks with it rattling to shit today, are there any other things I should be concerned about??
