I bought a wrecked ute. Lots of work but my question is about the diff. I have a guy doing all the fixing. Can somebody advise if anything other than a v8 LSD diff will fit? I.e I don't want a non LSD installed maybe from a v6 wagon or something. Thanks!!![]()
either your wording wasnt right or im not reading right but at the end of the day you can use a sedan diff a wagon diff or a ute diff there all the same in that series the only thing is v8 diffs are a little more heavy duty they use bigger bearings inside as oposed to the v6 ones it should say High Performance on the tag if its a LSD diff it will say LSD High Performance factory supercharged V6's also used the high performance diffs hope that helps
If it says high performance on diff tag it will be an open centre diff.........if it says LSD high performance on diff tag it is indeed LSD. I have a VX Berlina Sedan with the LS1 & it currently has a LSD diff from a VY Maloo ute (3.46). I noticed ur ride is a vx ute??? sure is not a vu?? didnt think ute come out in the vx!
Sorry yes it's VU. Thanks for your replies. I just would like to think that I'll get it back with a LSD. But if it's possible for a non-LSD to be fitted then for cost savings (which I asked for) they might put one of those in. In my vehicle, can they fit a non LSD? Thx again.
I know the year is 2001 so is it VU or VY ?
It would be a VU mate & yes mate they can fit a non LSD & even fit it from a 6 cylinder....but what is wrong with the diff in ur ute?? The LSD I bought from the VY Maloo ute was only $500 & fitted it myself. The diff in ur ute SHOULD be LSD standard??. I have a standard non lsd here if its any good to you....you can have it altho it is a 3.07.1 ratio
So back to original question, can a non LSD go in my ute? Or can only a LSD go in?
VU SS didnt get LSD standard i dont think?
You can put a standard non lsd in there if you like....even from a 6 cly wagon, sedan & ute, will all fit
It will be easier to break traction, because one wheel can spin, while the other is stationary. However it will be less likely to fishtail because it won't "lock".
Traction can be an issue in utes, particularly when the tray is empty so I'd stick with the LSD, given the choice
What do you think I'm getting if I know the diff going in was $400 from a wrecker? It's not likely to be LSD is it...
Like I said, I paid $500 for my LSD & it was out of a VY HSV Maloo ute with only 35,000ks on it. Im not sure what you'll get. Id assume coming from a wrecker they will give you a cheap arse single pegger & pocket the other $300 Id say. My Sedan used to be a single pegger & it sucked as I could'nt get much power down because it was easy to spin one wheel. If your going to the trouble of rebuilding this ute.....shop around & get the good stuff....good stuff can be cheap too, you just need to know where to look.
Go to Utube & search for MrSirWantalot. There will be a burnout video there.......You 2 could have fun like this if you have a LSD
Dude no offence but i think your pretty silly if your paying someone to re do the car and you have no idea what there putting in it if your paying $400 for a stock open wheeled diff your getting ripped off i wrecked a car with a non LSD high performance diff and i sold the diff for $50 no offence stop the guess work and ring them and ask what there putting in if its not a LSD tell them to send it back and buy one for your self all you need to know is if its a metal flange type or the 3 bolt rubber donout type if you look on ebay there is one in brissy now its LSD and its currently $199 shop around and never asume you will get something be sure you ask for it other wise your giving them free choice to do what ever with your car at your cost
That's ok, no offence taken. I appreciate everybody's input. Sorry for late reply. I was in hospital with freakin pneumonia. I don't recommend it!!
The reason I don't know a lot about what is happening with it is that it's a "project". I fully trust the guy it's with, who does body work and other repairs. i.e. diff and steering rack, engine cradle etc. Turns out that the diff that went in is actually a LSD and it cost me $400. Not bad I'm thinking.
I bought this as a wreck off a buddy, and it's needed engine cradle, diff, steering rack, every panel needs work except tail gate and bonnet (2 x new panels as they were too bad to fix). It's costing me about $3500 for all this work which I think is pretty good.
Comments? Feedback?
Thanks everyone :-)
where on the diff can you check to see what ratio it is?
Not sure if there are any other markings elsewhere but my VX SS has a white paper sticker on it which says what ratio it is along with things like serial number, casing number etc. It says on mine 3.07:1 ratio. Trouble is it is a printed sticker and the information on it is mostly worn off and hard to disipher.
I have had the car from new.
Standby everyone. I should have my repaired ute back in about a week or so. Can I somehow upload pics of what it looked like before the repair? Then I'll upload finished pics.
Also, it's confirmed that it's definitely a limited slip diff that's been fitted!
New diff, new steering rack, new engine cradle, new rims and tyres (right side were smashed when they hit the gutter at high speed), ute rolled on left side so panel work needed as well as right side which hit 2 poles as you can see, complete respray except for bonnet and tailgate. Given all the work, it really should have been a write off, but I found a guy who could do all the panel work and diff/engine/steering work for about $3.5k. Considering I bought the wreck for $3k it's pretty good!!
am I the only one who cant see the pic?
