On the occasions that I have changed a water pump I simply used the gasket only, no leaks.

if its the the black goo in a orange tube is fairly runny and makes a mess and does not always seal take ages for it to set i always use the blue goo

I use the blue Permatex silicone, no leaks. Personally I wouldn't put it on dry.

I always use Loctite 515 for water pumps, thermostat housings, etc. Never had a problem and I plan to keep on using it.

Holden (or whoever makes the Colorado) also uses it from factory to seal the front wheel hubs instead of a gasket.
