Default vt wont start after head gasket change

so the engine is back together after having the heads off (both were cracked), went by the workshop manual, and went to kick it over, cranks perfect, but when its running, coughs, splutters and eventually stalls after 15 or so seconds. slight petrol smell in the engine bay, no smoke from the exhaust at all. brand new leads, plugs, dfi module, air filter, 1/2 tank fuel, maybe a week old. i have no idea whats going on with it. while its running, if u apply the accelerator either a little, or half way, it just bogs down, stalls and backfires. any help is greatly appreciated.

Aiming for the timing as well...
It should be 1 - 3 - 5 Left hand bank (1 being at the front of the motor 5 being at the back)
2 - 4 - 6 Right hand bank (2 being at the front of the motor 6 being at the back)
    Double check your leads first.
If it's not a Symptom its not relevant, and if its not relevant I don't care!

how do u check timing? as for leads on, they're on right. took notes before the dfi came off, triple checked since it has been back on the car, even checked diagrams on here as well, leads are definately on the right order, and clicked in fully. has me stumped

I guess so? Timing cover never came off. So it's still how it was when the car was running.

Make sure all the fuel injectors are plugged in properly and make sure they are all pushed in to the inlet manifold properly and not leaking.

Could it be the fuel pump or regulator? If u let it prime for 30 seconds, it runs rough as, but marginally smoother

Oh here's the other thing. With the air intake off at the throttle body, it won't start. Just cranks and dies. A little white smoke comes out as well. Wtf.

Pull the plugs out and make sure they arent wet, crank the engine over a couple of times with the plugs out then refit.

You can't start the car with the air intake off because of the air flow meter. I made that mistake after I done the engine conversion and was trying to start it up with no intake pipe, put it on and it started straight away. You can take any part of the air intake off before the air flow meter but anything after the air flow meter it wont start (if it does it wont run to good at all).

Maybe thats the problem your having.

Ricey, I'll try that first thing tomorrow

Scvs6, it was all hooked up when I initially had the problem, with the rough idle for 15 secs etc.

Fuel lines never left the rail. I don't have the quick release tool.
